I’m Gonna Marry Adam Lambert’s Voice

Q3 note: This article so perfectly captured the Adam fan experience for me that I wanted to post it on page 1 as a Sunday feature article. Thank you, Aleks, for writing this and for sharing it with us.

In futile attempts to ignore my addiction to all things Adam Lambert, I let the news of the past few weeks sweep past me, feeling horribly proud that I managed not to comment or flail or cry. I resisted the fabulous Halloween costumes, amazing photos from the Glee set, Adam as Captain Hook in the Todrick video and even the fact that my all time favourite Adam song Outlaws of Love appeared on the Bridegroom soundtrack, among other things. The reason was pretty simple – I don’t like being addicted to anything. It was time for me to test my will and determination.

It turned out I was declaring my small, personal victory all too soon; that is, I was counting my chickens before they were hatched, because Adam tweeted his rendition of Lady Gaga’s ‘Marry the Night’ and I watched my will and determination crumble into nothing after the first few tacts of the song. I knew it was his voice, I knew I loved it, but the instantaneous rush of adrenaline, (or is it serotonin?), the blood pounding in my ears, the strong and overwhelming feelings of affection and admiration, and the fact that I dropped everything I was doing at the moment in order to contemplate and analyze that phenomenon while listening to the song over and over again – well, it caught me a little by surprise.

I have it bad, ladies and gentlemen; I have it so bad for his voice that I can freely say that nothing compares to it, addiction-wise. I am trying to mentally catalogue all my guilty and not so guilty pleasures in order to make a vivid contrast, but nothing comes to my mind. A fabulous piece of red velvet cake with extra cream frosting, a steaming cup of coffee on the side, pales in comparison. Jumping butt-naked into a cool, secluded pond on a hot July day pales in comparison. If I had a freaky ability to magically heal from every ache and bruise in seconds, it would pale in comparison as well, I think.

Even now, when the song is turned off, my brain is playing it out of its own volition or out of its own need, because all those glorious things that Adam does with his voice and for which I, frustratingly so, cannot come up with good enough descriptors, feel so amazingly good; pleasure-inducing, blissfully, orgasmically good. His voice gives me both carnal and mental pleasure and since I am a law-abiding citizen of the world, I am going to do right by it; hence the title:)

Joking aside, here are some conclusions that I have reached: I don’t want him to speed his album creating process up because I agree that he should aim for longevity. I don’t want him to win or get or achieve this or that, or be more open or sharing. I don’t want him to follow me on Twitter or notice me. I don’t want to meet him so that we can have 20 seconds of exchanging pleasantries. There is only one thing I want him to do – to keep doing the thing he does with his voice. I want it to remain a mystery to me. I want to keep wondering what its secret is and whether it is beyond scales and tones, octaves and ranges. Maybe naming it or pinpointing it would break the magic, scatter the illusion. It should stay unidentifiable, unreachable, and remain so efficiently enticing and alluring. I want to keep chasing its mojo and keep yearning for the next fix.

So, without his fairy tale-like image, without sparkly capes and boots and all those great things about him, and, believe it or not, even without fairy dust and magic potions, his voice takes me to a place of fantasy and surreal. I remember those places; they used to appear under my childhood comforters or in the secret ‘house’ my friend and I made under the old tree trunk near the river. Those were my happy places; it was childhood escapism at its best. Today, those places are far more real and rare. Well, Adam’s voice takes me there, to my happy place, and it simply makes me feel good. I just remembered that there is one more thing I want to do - to tell him thank you. I know that he gets a thousand thank yous a day, but I wish there was a way for him to hear mine. It’s only right.
