Coming out of perpetual lurkdom to state the OBVIOUS! hehehe
no kidding! We are all with you! and with the PERFECT name like yours you should be posting away!!!! Mine came out of nowhere some time back in the very early 90s when chat rooms just appeared and I joined a "parenting" one right after my DD was born... the name "nica" just poped into my mind when I needed to register...no connection to anything in my RL... almost 20 years later I found myself registering on the AI forum, remembered "nica", but it was taken, so I added my favorite numbers - 5s and 7s...the 575 combination was available.... (now I know that numbers in avi names should be avoided as it is apparently difficult to remember names with numbers....but who knew...)

This is so fascinating. I've always wondered about some screen names. I wouldn't have guessed the stories behind some of them!
Way back when I first started posting online, in my first fandom (this would be my third), I just wanted to use a name that would be easy for me to remember, but I thought my real name was kinda recognizable and unusual (at the time) and Internet forums were new and scary to me (at the time, maybe still), so I used a nickname. I've actually never had a true nickname in real life that people use consistently---sometimes they just shorten my name from the front or back end when they want to call me quickly. Misha was born out of an even more abbreviated name a friend called me in college.
I've always used some variation (necessary because I've since discovered that it's not unique and plenty of people use the name : ) of Misha whenever I've posted online---except for the second fandom I joined, where for romantic reasons I used a variation of my middle name (I'm oh so original, LOL). I haven't checked in on that fandom in a while (I need to, I miss it!), but in all the years of participating, I remember I never quite felt like "myself" when I saw my own posts or people responded to me. It's the oddest thing, how attached we get to names/identity, even online.
