Peace for Christmas time 2013 has been officially declared in Turku Finland, a tradition that started in 1320's (only exceptions being a couple of times when there has been a war). People are urged to behave and avoid disputes in order to have a peaceful Christmas. Earlier also reminder to be careful with fire was important. All legal consequences were more severe if the peace was breached with illegal or inappropriate actions. www.turku.fi/Public/default.aspx?contentid=483818&nodeid=23(first photo by Rami Nurmi, only a link because the pic doesn't show up) The declaration took place at the Old Market Square (near the Cathedral in the pic) at noon, this year in the rain. All shops close their doors at that time too and public transport stops at 2 pm for the Christmas Eve and the Christmas Day. The most important is that all the remaining cleaning or shopping is done before noon - and then the traditions start. Some people go to church for a short vesper (for many that's the only time they go) or to the cemetary and light a candle on the grave of their loved ones. Some people stay at home and start eating and waiting for Santa Claus. Many go to the sauna in the afternoon. Christmas music, flowers and candles add to the festivity but the main thing is the food and spending time with family. The menu is quite varied nowadays but ham is still popular. Also cold starters like smoked salmon, herring and other fish as well as liver paté, pressed tongue, reindeer, mushroom salad etc belong to Christmas table. Side dishes are made of root vegetables, potatoes etc. Fruit plate is customary too, maybe because the ships came in just before Christmas bringing oranges and pears etc. However, families have their own favourites and traditions. I'm going to set the table and prepare mulled wine before going to the sauna soon. Now it's time to wish you all PEACEFUL AND MERRY CHRISTMAS!
