The film snippet from the Jared Leto film certainly gave a rather one-sided impression, but 30STM also had an established fanbase and a track record to show for and yet, the negotiations seem to have been troubled or perceived as such.

Whatever the individual situation with them were, and I am sure they were different from Adam in many ways, what seems to be happening in the industry is that the old business model does not work anymore and in the general panic, contract negotiations are difficult because everybody just negotiates to save their own skin, and nobody quite sees where the business model is, that is viable.
I do think that in many new contracts the labels put the screws on so tight that there is no room to breathe (idol recent seasons, just as an example), and the labels do that because they are facing much lower direct sales revenue from recordings and have to find alternative sources of income, while at the same time slimming down their own operations. Not an easy task either.

If I look at this situation, I think that this is the time for entrepreneurship, and a completely new business model, which needs to come from the outside, and not the established labels.

Whether Adam is involved in any such thing and working with others to get something going, I have no idea, but the longer this whole thing takes, the more I think, that is what is going on. Does not mean that such a new arrangement could not exist somehow associated with the overall umbrella of one of the major label candidates that were tossed around (Island and Lava) or somebody else, but I don't think that the only announcement will be that AL signed with label X. There is something else going on, and I think that Adam enjoys his independence quite a bit. He has great lawyers, great PR, great cooperations, etc... he has other artists at hand for anything he wants to create, he is well taken care of without a typical big label contract. And the one thing that big label typically offers (radio play) did not happen for him anyways, even when he was signed to a major label, and yet his career was successful. So, I think that proves that it is possible for him. Don't know whether I will be right, but something is up, that is for sure.
