Missed another twitter party, though this one looks like it was a more serious discussion rather than a party. Good to hear from him again.
I have to say, the first set of tweets is one, I am always somewhat ambivalent about, as this topic has been raised by Adam before.
Obviously, knowing that Adam finds those statements like 'I wish you were not gay, so I could marry you', seem offensive to him, I always cringe when I read them, though they are probably just written by somebody young, who has not read every one of his tweets. I doubt there is anyone who wants to offend him with this.
But yet, Adam feels offended, and with that he also shows how sensitive and not on equal terms the whole topic for him still is.
Example: I am a straight woman. If another woman had ever come up to me and said, 'I wish you were lesbian, so we could make out', it would have never occurred to me to take this as an offense, a little weird maybe, but certainly not offensive. I would have taken it as a compliment that she finds me sexually attractive.
The difference obviously is, that I never had to battle for my right to be straight and happy about it, it is just a given. Whereas Adam had to defend his orientation time and time again, against those that consider it as less that preferable, a curse, a disability, a burden, a sin, whatever....but definitely not something positive. Against that he had to work to develop the pride in his orientation and a willingness to defend it as a part of his identity.
Shouldn't the goal be that all orientations are on even basis? Adam does not want to be victimized by his orientation, yet with the fact that he hears a put-down on his orientation, rather than the compliment to him as a person in that sentence, he is showing that things are not equal at all.
So just makes me sadz that he cannot hear the compliment that he has been given. People love him, find him attractive, sexy...that is what they are trying to say....and yet, all he hears is that his orientation is not ok, when that was not really intended by that twitterer at all.
