Kelis returns with ‘Food’

Around the same time Nas opened the Tribeca Film Festival with a performance, his ex, Kelis, launched her new album, “Food,” at an intimate gig in LA.

She played a show at the Standard Hollywood for guests including Adam Lambert and ’80s R&B crooner Jody Watley.
During one tune, Kelis yelled, “I know there are some singers in the house, do this with me!”

Kelis, who had a 2003 hit with “Milkshake,” has gone gastronomic again with songs including, “Breakfast,” “Cobbler” and “Jerk Ribs.”

It’s a battle of the green-haired singers! Both Katy Perry and Adam Lambert are known for their outrageous styles and often-changing hair colors, and this time, the pop stars both dyed their hair green within a week of each other. The ‘Dark Horse’ singer colored her locks “slime green,” while the ‘American Idol’ alum went for a bluer shade of teal. Who rocks the green hue best?

Katy Perry dyed her hair a color she dubbed “slime green,” but to us, it actually looks a little more neutral and not as neon as we were expecting. But still, Perry — who is known for her bold hair choices — makes the look her own, showing off the almost army-green hue in short waves. The singer is also rocking kind of an ombre style: While her bangs and roots are her signature black color, her hair starts to ease into the green until almost her whole head of hair is that shade. We love how Katy Perry is always down to make bold fashion choices!

Adam Lambert‘s color is similar to Perry’s but has a noticeably more teal bent — not to mention, it looks completely different with his faux hawk and shaved sides. If anyone can pull off teal green hair, it’s Adam Lambert, who honestly looks amazing with both the color and the punk-rock cut. While he’s experimented with various different shades over the years, we think the green is one of his best yet. It should totally stick around for a while.

Do Adam Lambert and Katy Perry drink water from the same source? Is there something in the water? What other explanation is there for why two people decided to dye their hair green in the same week? I honestly can't think of any. Oh, maybe because it looks good? That could be it.

Adam Lambert debuted his new 'do on Instagram, captioning the photo, "Green hair don't care." I think you do care, Adam. I'd care if I could pull off green hair. Adam really went for it, even dyeing the closely shaved sides of his head. While it's hard to tell what shade of green his hair actually is (thanks, Instagram filters), it looks like it's a pretty dark shade.

We experienced the same Instagram issue with Katy Perry last week when she introduced us to her green hair. While she was calling it "slime green," her filter choice really washed it out. Luckily, when she showed up to an event later that night, we were able to see how vibrant it really is. Unlike Adam, Katy didn't dye all of her hair, opting instead to leave her roots and new-ish bangs totally dark. The roots keep us from thinking she's a natural green head. JK, her natural hair color is blue. Duh.

Released on The Works on February 27, 1984, single released July 16, 1984.


Brian is right. This is a beautiful song, and one that I would love to hear Queen perform live. It has a theatrical sensibility, lilting melody and soaring high notes that seems perfect for Adam. It is a song that is not well known in the US but deserves to be known.

"It's a Hard Life" was the third single from The Works. It reached number 6 in the UK Singles Chart and was their third consecutive Top 10 single from the album. It also reached number 2 in Ireland and number 20 in the Netherlands. It peaked at #72 in the US. 

"It's a Hard Life" is one of May and Taylor's favorite songs from Mercury (although they both said they hated the video). , and the intro was based on Ruggiero Leoncavallo's "Vesti la giubba", an aria from his opera Pagliacci. Mercury played piano and did most of the vocals, and conducted May about the scales he should use for the solo, described by May in the guitar program Star Licks as very "Bohemian Rhapsody"-esque.

This song revisits the theme, story and style of "Play the Game"which was written by Freddie for Queen's 1980 album The Game. "It's a Hard Life" revisits the lover from "Play the Game"with Freddie writing from the lover's perspective years later. "Play the Game" and "It's a Hard Life" are of a similar structure, revolving around Mercury's piano and the band's multi-layered harmonies.

The song features Mercury on piano and the band's characteristic technique of layered harmonies. It is recorded very much with the style of earlier Queen albums and includes 'no synthesizers'. Queen had been using synths on their recordings since The Game (1980) and the gesture of returning to the traditional Queen sound was comforting to some fans.

The opening lyric and melody of "It's a Hard Life" is based on the line "Ridi, Pagliaccio, sul tuo amore infranto!" (Laugh, clown, at your broken love!) from "Vesti la giubba", an aria from Ruggiero Leoncavallo's opera Pagliacci.

Brian also contributed with some of the lyrics although only Freddie is credited.

Tim Pope's video which accompanies the song has been created in an operatic "style," with the band and extras appearing in period "operatic-style" costume. The video also featured an unusual "skull and bones"-themed guitar that cost more than £1,000, played by May, which can be seen on the single cover.

The band found the costumes hot and uncomfortable, and the "eyes" on Mercury's outfit were ridiculed by the others, saying he looked "like a giant prawn".[2]Both Roger Taylor and Brian May[3] groaned out loud when shown this video during their commentary for the Greatest Video Hits 2 collection. Taylor said it was "the worst music video ever." May pointed out more positively that the video was an ironical take, as it portrayed Mercury as a wealthy man singing about how hard life and love are, and at that point Mercury in real life possessed great wealth but was still searching for love.

Roger Taylor, by his side, remarked that he'd "actually loved the song, hated the video." Despite this, the video was posted on the band's official YouTube channel.
