‘It’s because people want it’: Brian May on why Queen has moved on with Adam Lambert
Brian May addresses his willingness to continue Queen past the death of Freddie Mercury and the retirement of John Deacon, saying it’s not for the filthy lucre. He and Roger Taylor do, he says, for the fans.
“We don’t need the money and we don’t need the fame — so why would we do it?” May rhetorically asks theTimes of Malta. “If the Queen legacy is going on and on, it’s not because of us. It’s because people want it. And now and again, it’s nice to give people what they want.”
Mercury, the group’s unforgettable frontman, has been gone since 1991. Bassist Deacon, who co-wrote several of Queen’s most iconic hits, left the stage not long after. Since, May and Taylor have paired with a series of guest singers, including George Michael, Paul Rodgers and — most recently — Adam Lambert. There has also been a long-running Queen-themed musical, and a travelling Queen Extravaganza featuring up and coming talent. Queen + Lambert kick off their first-ever stateside tour together this summer.
“I like it,” adds May, a credentialled scientist who has developed into a passionate animal-rights activist, as well. “I don’t have to it, and I certainly don’t want to do it all the time. After all, we did it for twenty years. I like to have the freedom to do [duo shows with Kerry Ellis], to do astronomy, to try to change the world with regards to animals.”

The 2014 "Part-of-the-World" Queen + Adam Lambert Tour Countdown!
4.27.14 by Q3
The countdown moves on and the start of this epic tour gets closer. Only 53 days to go!
#53 Songs Never Performed by Queen Part 1
There are 31 Queen songs on official Queen studio album releases and B-side(1) that were released while Queen was still performing adn never performed by Queen in concert. A few have been performed by one member of the band. For example, Roger Taylor performed "Tenement Funster" many times in his solo concerts and Brian performed "Good Company" in 2012.
(1) I have excluded the Flash Gordon movie soundtrack (1980). I have also excludes the albums released after Queen stopped performing in 1986: The Miracle, Innuendo, and Made in Heaven.
Of the 31 songs that were never performed by Queen, six of these songs have already been part of the countdown and covered by Talon and me.

10 more songs that Queen never performed live
Let me kick this installment of the Countdown off with two songs that deserve to be considered for the QAL setlist, both composed by Roger Taylor: the glam rock composition, "The Loser in the End," and a song that could be released today, the beat-track centered "Fight from the Inside".
"The Loser in the End" (1974) released on Queen II
Composed by Roger Taylor.
This is a simple song -- only four chords. It was probably never performed live because it has little to do with the themes of Queen II or the directions of the band. It is a glam rock song similar to "Children Of The Revolution" by T-Rex, and "Sparks" by The Who. The song includes a vibrating chorus-effect on the guitar are that is common in glam rock feeling. This is one of the songs from this list that Adam could really do something with.

"Fight from the Inside" (1977) released on News of the World
Composed by Roger Taylor.
"Fight from the Inside" was written and sung by Roger. In addition to the drums, he also plays rhythm and bass guitar, the latter borrowed from John Deacon. The track is built around a jangly guitar riff and is amongst the first in the Queen catalog to focus predominantly on the drums and bass, as opposed to the lead guitars. It is also the only song in the band's discography recorded almost entirely by one member (Brian May contributed additional guitar).
Guitarist Slash, former lead guitarist of the American hard rock band Guns N' Roses, has cited the guitar riff to this song as one of his favorite riffs of all time. In 1988, it was rewritten as "Gey, lyubo!" by the Ukrainian rock band Vopli Vidopliassova.

QAL needs more COWBELL!! And a bit of Latin!
“Who Needs You” (1977) released on News of the World
This is a song that I would love to hear live but I think that it would be stylistically jarring if Queen switched to this Latin beat. Adam, however, routinely moves from rock to pop to reggae to blues to electro dance in the space of 40 minutes in concert so perhaps there might be some more openness to songs from the Queen catalog that are more unusual.
"Who Needs You" was written by John Deacon, who, along with Brian, plays Spanish guitar. Freddie's lead vocal is entirely on the right audio channel while the lead guitar is on the left channel. Brian also plays maracas and Freddie plays a cowbell.
Since Adam is standing in for Freddie, if they did this we might get a 1,000 animated GIFs of Adam playing a cowbell!

Recording information by Philipp (PraxisNothaft@t-online.de)
Recorded in summer 1977 in England.
Released in october 1977 on the album News Of The World.
General:
John brought a new style into Queen: Latin.
The song itself is light, easy to listen to and very, very nice. It sounds as if the band had lots of fun during the recording sessions.
Drum & Percussion:
Roger did the basic drum-kit-tracks. Bass-drum, snare/toms (he only hits the rims) and ride-cymbal are in the middle (the snare/toms go from right to left at the start). The hi-hat is right. Brian played maracas, which were panned left. Freddie's cowbell-track is in the center.
Guitars:
There are two acoustic rythm guitars (left-right). Probably both are played by John. The acoustic solo-guitar is done by Brian (panned left). Then there´s an overdub-track with an acoustic guitar, playing natural harmonics. And last but not least there are three electric guitars. They´re playing the multi-track backing (left-middle-right).
Sounds:
The acoustic guitars are spanish acoustics with nylon strings, plucked with fingers. The electric guitars have got a bit of phasing/chorus.
Vocals:
The backing vocals were all done by Freddie (about 4-5 voices) and are mixed into the middle.
Freddie's lead vocals are panned right.

More songs Queen has never performed live
Many Queen songs come in pairs – two songs with a similar technique, theme or inspiration interpreted completely differently by Freddie and Brian. Here is one of those sets with two novelty songs that are very unlikely to be performed by Queen + Adam Lambert. From the 1975 Queen masterpiece “A Night at the Opera”.
“Seaside Rendezvous” (1975) released on A Night at the Opera
Here is a track they should play at one concert! Queen + Adam Lambert in Atlantic City.
This is a novelty song filled with Queen firsts and one-time onlys. "Seaside Rendezvous", written by Freddie, is notable for the mock-instrumental bridge section which begins at around 0:51 into the song. The section is performed entirely by Freddie and Roger using their voices alone. Freddie imitates woodwind instruments including a clarinet and Roger mostly brass instruments, including tubas and HeWhoCannot amedets, and even a kazoo; during this section Roger hits the highest note on the album, C6. The "tap dance" segment is performed by Freddie and Roger on the mixing desk with thimbles on their fingers. Mercury plays both grand piano and jangle honky-tonk.

Good Company (1975) released on Night at the Opera

The Making of 'Good Company'
Brian explains how he single handedly created an entire dixieland band with layered guitar tracks. Amazing. Genius.
youtu.be/POsOP3TF-XY
This was performed by Brian May in 2012. Here is the first live performance of this song by Brian. Filmed at the Brian May and Kerry Ellis Born Free tour - 16/11/2012 at Portsmouth. Very funny section where Brian forgets the instrumental section in the middle - but all good natured and well received by audience.

“You and I” (1976) released on A Day at the Races
"You and I" is John Deacon's song on the album. It features him on acoustic guitar and Mercury playing Elton John-esque piano parts. The song was never played live. It was featured as the b-side for "Tie Your Mother Down".
youtu.be/DbDsgghrdJ4
“Drowse” (1976) released on A Day at the Races
"Drowse" was Roger Taylor's song in 6/8 having him playing rhythm guitar and timpani and doing all of the vocals. Brian played slide guitar during this and "Tie Your Mother Down" (the second guitar solo in the middle of the song). Taylor's song on the previous album, "I'm In Love With My Car", was also in 6/8.
The song is notable for being Roger's first "soft" song, his previous compositions being usually the heaviest rock pieces of the album. Roger sings octave lead vocals during the verses (except for the third and final verse).
youtu.be/Hys0ZFWzafc
She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettos) (1974) released on Sheer Heart Attack
"She Makes Me" was written and sung by Brian with John playing acoustic guitars. Its finale features what Brian referred to as "New York nightmare sounds," which include NYC police vehicle sirens and deep-breathing sounds which accompany the closing bars. Stormtroopers in Stilettos: Queen, The Early Years was the name of the 2011 exhibition on Queen, which was held at Old Truman Brewery in Brick Lane, East London.
youtu.be/u5dsOqjaRbQ
“Long Away” (1976) released on A Day at the Races
"Long Away" was written by Brian May wrote the song who also sings the lead vocals. The single was released in the US, Canada and New Zealand but did not chart anywhere.
It is one of the few Queen songs where Brian used a guitar other than his Red Special. For the rhythm guitar parts he used an electric Burns twelve string guitar (although he used the Red Special for the second guitar solo in the middle section of the track). Originally May wanted to use a Rickenbacker guitar which was used by John Lennon who Brian admired, but Brian “didn't get along well” with the Rickenbacker's thin neck. . Roger Taylor sings the highest parts of the song. Freddie Mercury only did the backing vocals.
This is a sad song both in tone and lyrics: "for every star in heaven / there's a sad soul here today," and was intended to convey an overall sense of “melancholic nostalgia”. It is similar in feel to the song '39 from A Night at the Opera and it appears that Brian prefers “39” leaving this song of Queen’s setlists.

“All Dead All Dead” (1977) released on News of the World
This song puzzled fans until on an episode of In the Studio with Redbeard, Brian confirmed rumors that the song is about the passing of his cat. It is a song that could be paired with Freddie’s “Deliah”
"All Dead, All Dead" was written and sung by Brian May, and features Freddie on piano and backing vocals..[4]
