iHR Concert Preview --
about 500 people in LA can't stop smiling
6.17.14 by Q3
Earlier tonight I had the privilege to attend the iHeartRadio Queen + Adam Lambert concert preview. I promise to post a fill recap tomorrow. Some first impressions.
I promise to write a full recap of this concert soon. In the meantime, I am sitting in my hotel room and can’t stop smiling. I am not alone. Fans who were lucky enough to be at this concert, all left with uncontrollable smiles firmly planted on the face.
Here is a video. There is NO chance that what I experienced earlier tonight could be recorded – no matter how good the recording is. None. There was an energy in the entire place that was like being inside of one of those Electric glass balls…one of these:
Here is the video.

The iHR Theater Los Angeles is small – they use the word intimate but it was small. I was literally only 4 fans away from the edge of the stage.
Fans were mostly in the General Admission section on the floor in front of the stage. The upper seated areas, the VIP sections, were filled with mostly with Adam’s friends, family and business associates. There were also people associated with the venue, iHR and local radio stations, and a few people associated with the tour. I also met a few people in the GA area who were business associates.
It was a very diverse audience but my guess is that it was about half fans – a mix of Queen fans, Adam fans and Q+AL fans. But everyone I spoke to after the event left as a Q+AL fan – and I spoke to a lot of random people.
Some people had great stories. Two guys found out they won passes yesterday and drove in from El Paso, Texas. A 20ish girl behind me was an Adam fan who won tickets from a radio station and brought along her Queen-fan boyfriend – they both left as QAL fans. Two tall gays -- massive Queen fans – were proudly wearing colorful caps with horns that one guy’s mom made for them just for the show – awesome hats but thankfully they were not in front of me. To my right was a girl who knew Adam from when they were kids at the MET in San Diego. A 35 year old guy I met was a massive Queen fan who won his pass from Queen online and became a fan because of “Wayne’s World”. And he knew everything about Queen – I mean everything.
• Nikki Sixx surprised the heck out of me. I did not expect that the opening interview would be so well done. His questions were the questions I wanted to hear asked and the answers were great. High point: Adam’s Dream about the set needing “more”. And I can’t wait to see the gilded set in Chicago! The gold set is going to look amazing!! And what could be more regal?
• Adam was amazing – from start to finish. In the interview segment he was clearly comfortable in this role and enjoying work with Roger and Brian. On stage he was powerful, funny, loose and vocal insanity. And he look gorgeous-sexy-awesome. And he looked fantastic! His hair in a neo-Elvis updo, jewelry, the black open shirt, skull belt and those pants. (Yes, the pants were better live!!)
• Brian was just beyond hot tonight. He seem move alive and energetic than ever. And Brian and Roger just seemed to be having a ton of fun.
• Compared to the 2013 iHR Music Festival they had a stronger rock edge to the music. Brian promised the upcoming concert would have a lot of 70’s music and they would play the rock songs. And based on this teaser, I am sure that is the plan. I could not be happier because this concert preview really did remind me of Queen circa 1975-1978 when the band was unequivocally a rock band no matter what genre a specific song was.
• The confetti drop was too glorious to describe! And there were stars mixed in with the square bits!
Song Performance
The whole concert was a standout moment but within that awesomeness there were a few mega moments!
The setlist was 8 songs – including the one big, big surprise.

The concert opened with WWRY. The performance had a harder rock feel to it vs. the version performed at iHR MF in 2013. When I heard the first 30 of this song, I started to believe that the upcoming tour would be a Queen Rock concert with a lot of the feel from the 1970’s. Brian later confirmed this. I am beyond thrilled!
“Another One Bites The Dust": There can be no doubt that Adam loves this song. And he was unusually animated in this performance.
“Crazy Little Thing Called Love”: Brian pulled out some new, magic guitar licks on this one. Brian and Adam seemed to just be having the best time. At one point, Adam did that Elvis look and Brian just looked at him with a look that was “WTF did you just do?” It was one of those moments when I would love to have mind reading skills!
“Fat Bottomed Girls”: Adam had the whole audience singing along on this one. And he really was having a ball with this performance. Brian was also just having a good time. Usually I do not sing along with this one but last night, I could not resist. Seriously Adam was pointing at us and "forcing" us to join him.
“Under Pressure”: Adam and Roger used a slightly adjusted vocal arrangement for this song – and it was very effective. I am not sure if the live stream vocal mix will do this justice but it was a very powerful, very emotional rendition of this song. UP can often be a bit formulaic, and cold. Adam’s vocal on the last section of this saw was almost searing. Also, pretty amazing that Roger sung this song and also played drums – something he has done before but not something most 60+ year old musicians can pull off.
“We are the Champions”: Some of the vocals on this approached the impossible! I have never heard him sing some that run before and it fit perfectly. It also contained the lyrics variation where Adam changed “atom bomb” into “Adam bomb” and pointed to himself.
“Don’t Stop Me Now” was just irresistible. It was done as a crowd sing-along with lyrics videos -- which I expect to see in concert. And the crowd, Adam, Brian and Roger all looked like this could be the theme song for this tour. And it included the cute lyrics change....Adam bomb.
Tonight I'm gonna have myself a real good time
I feel alive and the world turning inside out - yeah
And floating around in ecstasy
So don't stop me now don't stop me
'Cause I'm having a good time having a good time
I'm a shooting star leaping through the sky
Like a tiger defying the laws of gravity
I'm a racing car passing by like Lady Godiva
I'm gonna go go go
There's no stopping me
I'm burnin' through the sky yeah
Two hundred degrees
That's why they call me Mister Fahrenheit
I'm trav'ling at the speed of light
I wanna make a supersonic man out of you
Don't stop me now I'm having such a good time

Don't stop me now
If you wanna have a good time just give me a call
Don't stop me now ('Cause I'm having a good time)
Don't stop me now (Yes I'm havin' a good time)
I don't want to stop at all
Yeah, I'm a rocket ship on my way to Mars
On a collision course
I am a satellite I'm out of control
I am a sex machine ready to reload
Like an

I left the best for last! This performance brought tears to my eyes. The performance had moments of brilliance in it. We have seem Adam convert disco songs into ballads before but this was different. It was a rock ballad and it was a duet between Adam and Brian. This is the song I most want to hear again live NOW.
After the concert, Adam posted this question:
ADAM LAMBERT ✔ @adamlambert
Are you ready!!!??? We are so excited! @queenwillrock instagram.com/p/pVdzBCONL8/
Yes, Adam I am so ready! Next stop: CHICAGO!!
Postscript: I got another “I can’t believe it moment last night” – I got to meet Sam Sparro, one of my favorite singer and songwriters, and to speak to him. Truly a Mt. Everest moment for me.
Yes. It is 5:38 Eastern time. The concert has been over for over 6 hours. I still can’t get this silly grin off my face!

Let me close with this Tweet from Brian….who I suspect also can’t stop smiling tonight and how is apparently still up too!

Just got back off the floor.
Nick wasn't kidding.
Love Kills?!?!?! NOW THAT'S FUCKING AWESOME. A true surprise in a time where many of Brian's claims of dangerous, surprising, etc. are a bit exaggerated...
Love Kills
Written by Freddie Mercury(/Giorgio Moroder) ***Note that Moroder was given credit as the song was used for his remake of the film Metropolis but it was really written by Freddie.
Musicians:
Freddie Mercury - vocals, keyboards
Mack - keyboards, programming
See notes below but also additional musicians:
Brian May - guitar
Roger Taylor - programmed drums
Possibly:
John Deacon - bass guitar
Love don't give no compensation
Love don't pay no bills
Love don't give no indication
Love just won't stand still

Ruining your heartline
Stays for a lifetime won't let you go
Because love (love) love (love) love won't leave you alone

- Used on the soundtrack for the film Metropolis
- Originally this was tried as a Queen demo and in 2000 Brian stated that the released version almost certainly contains his guitar and Roger's programmed drums. Since it was a Queen track, it wouldn't be far fetched to say that John's bass is also included but it does sound more like a synth bass.
- There were many remixes made of this track but Freddie never tried it live.
ALTERNATE RELEASED VERSIONS
Metropolis Version
- NOT ESSENTIAL
- The soundtrack version which is slightly mixed differently.
Argentinian Edit
- NOT ESSENTIAL
- Fades out before the instrumental outro
Extended Version
- NOT ESSENTIAL
- Extends some of the instrumental sections.
Instrumental

- Simply without vocals
Richard Wolf Mix
- ESSENTIAL
- Redone for a compilation of remixes, this version rocks. It is a hard rock almost metal version of the track.
Wolf Euro Mix
- NOT ESSENTIAL if you listen to above
- Same basic mix with an a capella opening.
Rock Mix
- NOT ESSENTIAL but nice
- Remixed as a rock song, but a more straight forward rock song. Probably a bit closer to what Brian would have done.
Star Rider Remix
- Created specifically for a Freddie best of compilation
- Upbeat and poppier version.
Halo White Label Mix
NO YT VIDEO
- NOT ESSENTIAL
- Very different remix, too dancy for me.
Rank 1 Remix
Rank 1 Vocal Extended
NO YT VIDEO
Rank 1 Dub Mix
- NOT ESSENTIAL
- All 3 are very aggressive dancy mixes.
Sunshine People Radio Mix
Sunshine People Club Mix
NO YT VIDEO
- NOT ESSENTIAL
- More dancier versions but there are some interesting remix sounds.
Pixel 82 Mix
- NOT ESSENTIAL
- Very techno oriented mix
More Oder Rework by the Glimmers
- NOT ESSENTIAL
- Mostly instrumental remix.
Ultratraxx Version
NO YT VIDEO
- NOT ESSENTIAL
- Dancy Mix
UNRELEASED VERSIONS
Jazzy Mix
- NOT ESSENTIAL but nice
- Includes a new bass line as well as some scatting taken from another Freddie solo song, Living On My Own
- Remixed by The Fugitive Brothers.
Symphony Mix
- NOT ESSENTIAL but nice
- Replaces the synths with symphony sounds
- Remixed by The Fugitive Brothers
Synth Mix
NO YT VIDEO
- Not sure of it's authenticity but it sounds like a Fugitive Brothers Mix with heavier synths.
Freemasons Mix
- NOT ESSENTIAL
- Remixed by U-Neeq - Nothing exciting.
Demo
NO YT VIDEO
- NOT ESSENTIAL
- This early version is quite similar to the released version, some heavier keyboard effects.
PERSONAL NOTES:
- Great song. It's a good song to singalong to, unfortunately as Freddie was getting into his first solo project he was headlong into the 80s keyboards but this is a good track.
Queen + Adam Lambert Perform Freddie Mercury Solo Song 'Love Kills' for First Time Ever
By Lyndsey Parker
Maximum Performance
Queen + Adam Lambert embark on their first U.S. arena tour this Thursday, June 19, but on Monday night at their iHeartRadio Live show streamed on Yahoo Screen, 400 lucky fans got a preview of the tour, at the much more intimate iHeartRadio Theater in Burbank. And there, they were treated to a massive surprise on the new Queen setlist: "Love Kills."
"Love Kills" is a relatively obscure song, but Queen fanatics definitely know (and love) it. It was late, great original Queen frontman Freddie Mercury's first song recorded as a solo artist, and was featured on electronic music legend Giorgio Moroder's soundtrack for the 1984 rerelease of Fritz Lang's classic 1927 silent film, Metropolis. While the track wasn't necessarily well-received at the time (it was actually nominated for "Worst Original Song" at the 1985 Razzie Awards), it did make it to No. 10 on the U.K. singles chart, and it went on to become a cult classic.
According to Queen's publicist, Queen never performed "Love Kills" live with Freddie, who died in 1991. Freddie never performed it solo, either. But almost 30 years after the song's release, Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor debuted a live version at the iHeartRadio Theater, with Adam Lambert singing lead.
This was a gutsy move. With rock purists likely already wondering if any singer, even one as talented as Adam, could ever "replace" Freddie Mercury, Queen + Adam Lambert reviving a Freddie solo song could have massively backfired.
But by putting a unique, semi-acoustic spin on the track, they remained respectful to the original — and to Freddie's legacy. "We're going to do it in our own way, minus the disco," Adam explained to the iHeartRadio audience.
Compare and contrast Queen + Adam Lambert's version of "Love Kills" above with Freddie's original below:
