Review: Queen, Adam Lambert shine in San Jose
By Jim Harrington
There are some very valid reasons not to embrace Queen in the 21st century.
But if fans are ever going to accept the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame act without the dearly departed vocalist Freddie Mercury, who died in 1991 from AIDS-related medical issues, then there's really no time like the present. It probably won't get any better for the band than the current Queen + Adam Lambert configuration.
The former "American Idol" runner-up, who lost to the far-less-intriguing Kris Allen during the TV show's eighth season in 2009, is a good fit to lead Queen in concert. Lambert's obviously no Mercury -- and he doesn't pretend to be -- but he's a lot closer to the mark than Paul Rodgers, the former Bad Company vocalist who worked with Queen from 2004 to 2009.
Apparently, the public agrees.
The current Queen + Adam Lambert tour is one of big hits of the summer. The trek's local stop -- which took place Tuesday night in San Jose -- reportedly sold out in just one day.
The 12,000 fans who filled the SAP Center seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves, grinning widely, applauding enthusiastically and singing with gusto through much of the roughly 2 ½ show.
The 24-song set list was performed by two of Queen's original members -- guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor -- with Lambert handling lead vocals and two (sometimes three) other musicians fleshing out the sound.
Did it ever seem like I was watching anything more than a Queen cover band? Maybe in a few spots -- such as when May burned through that famed guitar spot at the end of "We Will Rock You." Mostly, however, the answer was no.
That really leads into the whole philosophical argument of whether Queen is still Queen without Mercury. Similar debates rage around other acts, which have soldiered on without their most famous members.
Philosophy is one thing, however, and reality is quite another. The fact is that Queen -- which is also missing longtime bassist John Deacon, who left the fold in 1997 -- is still rocking in 2014.
The group opened the show with a strong statement -- "Now I'm Here" -- and then quickly followed with a solid take on "Stone Cold Crazy." After that double-shot from 1974's "Sheer Heart Attack," the troupe posted mixed results on the 1980-hit "Another One Bites the Dust," with Lambert struggling and the rest of the band rocking.
Lambert handled most of the more operatic moments just fine, especially when they required him to hit the high notes. Yet, he wasn't able to go the other direction -- and get down and dirty -- nearly as convincingly. He lacks Mercury's supreme swagger, which helped drive such cuts as "Another One Bites the Dust" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love."
Yet, Lambert certainly got more things right than wrong. He made the correct choice to not try to copy Mercury, but rather to put his own shiny pop brand on the lyrics. The result often sounded like we were listening to Muse, a group that has drawn Queen comparisons for much of its career.
The staging was simple, but effective, with a large video screen in back conveying the action to those in the rafters and a catwalk running about a third of the way across the arena floor to a small second stage. The swirling, colorful light show was the most important part of the presentation.
The group would utilize that second stage, located in the midst of the crowd, on several occasions. May sat there on a stool, playing guitar and sharing vocals with the crowd on "Love of My Life" (from 1975's "A Night at the Opera"), which included a video segment of Mercury singing as well. That was also the setting for a decent drum solo by Taylor, which led directly into a stellar version of "Under Pressure," Queen's collaboration with David Bowie that was eventually released on 1982's "Hot Space." Taylor handled Bowie's lines, while Lambert sang Mercury's part.
Lambert and Queen brought the main set to a close in fine fashion with the fan favorite "Bohemian Rhapsody" and then returned for the expected encore of "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions."

Recap From ljsmack
Went to SAP last night with son, DIL, and their friend all moderate Queen fans. Son knew Love Kills was from Metropolis when we talked at dinner. My second show after Chicago with Babs12, Adamrocks, momtomany,Shadow, didilynn. Very different experiencing with Adam virgins than with loyal Atop minions.
Sat in section 203, on the opposite side from the 100 level seats in Chicago. First, I've seen several San Jose Sharks games in this arena, which has a big jumbotron that was pulled up "out of the way." I mention this, because there is an enforced etiquette that one does not stand up unless there is a goal. More on this later. On the 200 level the three long curved speakers block out much of the big Q screen., but the lasers were fantastic, and I could see the side screen well.
The people around me were all Queen fans of various ages. A few brought their younger sons 10-12 yrs old, to experience a real rock concert--their words. There was major chair dancing, but no standing in my section until the encore. I looked up a few times and there was a major section standing throughout led by an Asian woman who actually conducted the sing along songs facing the crowd with her back to stage--especially during Bo Rhap. The most surprising observation I made was that grown men and older couples actually shed tears, starting with Love of My Life, some surreptitiously wiping their eyes, I could feel their genuine ache, for original Queen, and these folks were huge Brian fans. One guy told his son that it was cool that Roger brought his son to the concert, too. Adam got them with the ballads, starting with Love Kills, not so much before that.
The call and response is too early in the show with AOBTD. The crowd was still sizing things up, and I agree with reviewer that Adam seemed to struggle with the lukewarm response--however the floor crowd might have been more into it, but couldn't hear any real engagement from my section. This changed later when Adam did the same for some of the sing alongs. The arena vibrated with fan engagement then.
The shiny reflection of gold in Adam's costumes and boots/shoes were really noticeable from higher up. The fan fave in my section was the fringe. Lots of oohs and ahhs, like at fireworks. Not everyone in my section did the Gaga clap though there were pockets at the upper level who did. I remember everyone at Hammersmith sending this wave of collective energy and joy during any audience participation song, but the Gaga clap was special. I missed that feeling of participatory exuberance here. I did my part!
I would say that my family and those I heard talking after the concert were basking in a satisfied state, similar to the aftermath of a good meal with an excellent wine. The most awe and reverence comments were for Brian, and rightfully so, as he was glowing with his talented aura of joy at performing. My fam thought that Adam can really sing, but after hearing me wax poetically about him for five years, they expected him to be good. It was more difficult to capture the timbre of his voice that resonates with an internal quiver in me with the amplification necessary to fill the arena, which he does.
So it was a more subdued, yet heartfelt experience for me this time. I prefer a closer experience with my Atop family, which will occur again in Vegas. I want everyone to share my adoration of Adam at a rollicking level. Love Kills was my favorite at this concert.
