Queen + Adam Lambert thrill fans at The Forum
By Michelle Mills, San Gabriel Valley Tribune
When it was announced that classic rock band Queen would be touring with Adam Lambert sitting in for deceased lead singer Freddie Mercury, fans greeted the news with a mix of excitement and apprehension. Lambert might have been feeling the same way back stage, but strutted into his spot under the lights at The Forum on Thursday night with confidence.
The band’s lineup included original members guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, regular keyboardist Spike Edney, plus Neil Fairclough on bass and Taylor’s son, Rufus Taylor, also handling percussion.
There was no opening act -- just two hours of solid Queen songs beginning with “Now I’m Here.” Lambert took the tune on, as he did all that followed, with vocal prowess, channeling just a tad of Mercury while still making each song very much his own.
For “Killer Queen,” Lambert strode down the catwalk mid-audience to laze in a Victorian chair. He flirted and teased his way through the song, taking pause only for a long drink out of a Moet Chandon bottle. Lambert thanked the crowd and acknowledged the honor of performing with Queen for the first of many times during the night.
“Somebody To Love” followed with Lambert doing it justice and getting the audience to sing along until the big pause when everyone - including guitarist May, by the look on his face - waited to see if he would hit “the note.” Lambert not only hit it, he moved the song into a pop/soul crescendo that would have made Mercury smile.
One of the most moving moments of the night was when May took the spot on the catwalk stage with his acoustic guitar for a solo rendition of “Love of My Life.” The song was written by Mercury, so it was only fitting for him to take over the vocals via vintage video footage.
Drummer Roger Taylor also had his solo song time singing “These are the Days of Our Lives” accompanied by a video montage of Queen in their heyday.
Recalling Queen’s arena days, Taylor and May both had instrumental solos as well. Taylor did a rousing drum duet with his son, while May’s guitar went from mere space sounds and grooves to harmonic jazz notes and hard rock. The crowd, which had mostly sat down during this section, responded to May with a standing ovation.
In between the instrumental solos, Lambert continued to prove himself, almost channeling Mercury with the perfection of his notes during “Under Pressure.” After this tune, May joined him on the catwalk stage.
“I have to ask, I think it’s his hometown, what do you think of the new boy?” May said.
The audience went wild.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” ended the band’s show with Lambert sharing the vocal work with Mercury on video. Fittingly, Mercury had the last words, “Any way the wind blows.”
Queen + Lambert left the audience wanting and soon clapping the beat to “We Will Rock You.” They came back on stage - Lambert, who had been changing costumes all night was now in a leopard print suit and glittering crown - and launched into the song, ending finally with “We Are the Champions.”
Even in their 60s, May and Taylor still have the chops and the showmanship that made them famous. There will never be another Mercury, but Lambert paid him tribute while still successfully shining in his own way. All in all, the crowd was more than satisfied with this historic performance.
Fans seeking more of Queen + Adam Lambert can catch them at The Joint in Las Vegas on Saturday and Sunday.

Review Queen + Adam Lambert are overcome by Freddie Mercury at the Forum
It is perhaps the greatest compliment to Freddie Mercury that so much about Queen’s current live show feels like old news.
The veteran British rock band -- or half of it, anyway -- appeared Thursday night at the Forum with Adam Lambert, the former “American Idol” contestant, more or less playing the role of Mercury, who died in 1991. Guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor have revived the Queen brand before, touring and recording an album with Paul Rodgers of Bad Company. (Queen’s original bassist, John Deacon, hasn’t taken part in any of the recent reunions.)
But the peacocking Lambert, an avowed Mercury devotee, shares much more of a spirit with the group’s famously theatrical frontman, and he seems to have inspired May and Taylor to boost the spectacle factor for their summer arena tour. Thursday’s concert, billed as a performance by Queen + Adam Lambert, had lasers, multiple stages and a video camera attached to May’s guitar that he used to show off his virtuosic technique; there was also, inevitably, Lambert’s array of splashy costumes, including a leopard-print suit and a pair of spiked leather sleeves.

Yet none of this pageantry was pushing any boundaries that Mercury didn’t push decades ago. Queen’s gigs in the 1970s are as responsible as any for the exaggerated state of the modern arena concert; they’re what led to multimedia blowouts by the likes of Muse and Lady Gaga, who’s said to have taken her stage name from Queen’s song “Radio Ga Ga.” As a result, so much of what seemed designed to wow the crowd at the Forum merely met a reasonable level of expectation. It was par for the course.
Given the potential for creating something new with Lambert, an artist who’s demonstrated a distinct point of view in his own work, the show was also a disappointment, at least for those seeking more than rote nostalgia.
You caught a glimpse of Lambert’s personality -- the sexy-goofy charisma that made him such a sensation on “Idol” -- in his limited stage banter, as when he dedicated “Fat Bottomed Girls” to a portion of the audience he described with a delightfully unprintable epithet. He was good too in “Killer Queen,” which he sang while reclining on a purple velvet settee, his eyelashes fluttering with lovable mischief.
As a singer, though, Lambert made no impression on familiar Queen songs like “Somebody to Love,” “Tie Your Mother Down” and “Another One Bites the Dust”; he wasn’t telling us anything about the music we didn’t already know.
Did he sound great scaling the Everest-size choruses of “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions,” which closed Thursday’s show? Sure. But you know who else sounds great doing that? Freddie Mercury on Queen’s 1977 album “News of the World,” which I called up on my iPhone on the drive home.
But maybe Lambert is not to be blamed here. Midway through the concert, the singer disappeared for a long, dreary sequence in which May and Taylor performed as old footage of Mercury played on an enormous video screen at the rear of the stage. Taylor’s rendition of “These Are the Days of Our Lives” was especially egregious -- an admission, it seemed, that Queen’s glory days have passed.
But then why launch this pale imitation in the first place? May and Taylor are presumably raking in money from “We Will Rock You,” the Queen jukebox musical that recently closed after a 12-year run in London’s West End (and will arrive this month at the Ahmanson Theatre on a U.S. tour).
That suggests the two are in it for more artistic reasons -- except that this production seemed determined not to alter the idea of Queen as it has existed since Mercury’s death.
The group’s rendition of its signature hit, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” said it all: There was Lambert, belting out the introductory portion of the complicated song, doing the job he’d apparently been hired to do. Then the stage went dark and once again our eyes were directed toward the screen, where Mercury took over for the operatic section -- a humiliating demotion for the younger man attempting to honor his idol’s legacy.
Queen is dead; long live -- no, wait, let’s keep it that way.

8toinfinity's Recap:
Still waking up after the show. The concert images and songs filled my dreams. Truly. The filming is getting so good that there's no need to recap what you all can see and hear, so thought I'd add just a few impressions from "being there".
A little background first: My DH and I got to see the first show in London. This is our first show on the North American tour and DH was "in" from the start. I have watched some of the videos and just caught a little of one or two live streams from the other shows, but not much.
Confession here - even as an avid Lakers fan from the old days of Kareem and Magic, I have never been to the Forum. It's notorious for being in a bad area and was closed for a while after the Lakers left. I found it to be well - Fabulous. They don't lie. What struck me the most was that EVERYONE we came across working there were so nice! No bullying ushers, "of course you can get a cup of ice on the side", "The capacity? Oh let's see, I have a little sheet of facts with me, let me see if that's on there" "Wait a second before you use the porta-potty, I just cleaned it up but I want to spray this in there to make sure it smells nice." (it did, they were really clean and plentiful, lined up along the outside walkway behind a green topiary-like screen to ease the lines inside.) We were in the first tier and the seats were stacked so that the folks in front of you were far enough down that they wouldn't block your view when standing.
As momtomany commented re: her section in San Jose, the section we were in did not stand during most of the show. Neither did most of the other upper sections from what I could tell. That concerned me for about 2 songs, but the crowd was really into it nonetheless. There was love and joy in the Forum last night for sure.
I took my ear plugs and reminded friends to do the same, but found they distanced me from the show. Took them out early and left them out. No ear ringing after and no chipmunk effect. I think someone else mentioned earlier in this thread or another that they did the same.
The stage setup and production is wonderful. Lights, lasers, beams dancing over the audience like colored fireflies, smoke, fireworks, confetti, the raised cages on either side of the stage, the thrust (of course) and the video screens. The center one in the Q is everything!! We were 4 rows back in the 100 tier, only a little over from looking straight at the stage (Sec 133) and we got wonderful sound and the whole effect of the production. I worried about the seats, but they were great. We will be closer up at another show, but I'm really glad we got the experience of the whole effect. Only WTF? was the Q lowering, slowly, slowly. And then it went back up. What? Didn't really add much as far as I could tell. LOL Thought they would go in it for some effect or something. But no, it just inched it's way back up. Did I miss something?? Anybody?
A couple of friends were in the second tier a little more towards the stage than us, pretty high up but not really nosebleed area. They are not avid fans of Queen or AL but big concert goers and did see GlamNation at the OC Fair, - he's a very successful DJ (weddings, parties, graduations) and music lover. We hung out with them before the concert and checked out each others seats (because the ushers were okay with that!). He (the DJ) hadn't heard much about the tour, asked me how many of the band members were originals and said his friend wanted him to check out the Queen shirts that didn't say Adam Lambert on them. After the show she called me before we even left the stadium. Ecstatic. He was trying to add comments while she was talking into the phone. He bought a shirt with ADAM LAMBERT included! on his way out. All the usual gushing we hear from the people that were caught unaware of what was about to take place, but she said something that I saw on one Twitter comment as well. That was that the place was so big but the show was put together in a way that made it feel really intimate. On Twitter I think they said it was "personal". Apparently even folks that don't follow all this as we all do, notice this. I think that the way the personalities of Adam, Roger and Brian come through is amazing, but also Rufus and the others are included in the antics and staging. My friends go to A LOT of concerts. In her case, she often doesn't know the band or the songs, but loves going anyway. They were gob smacked. Clearly. I'm sure I'll talk to them more later today and add more of their impressions, if newsworthy, later.
Compared to London, my other live show, I thought Adam was more willing to wear the mantle of Front Man in his own right. I don't know if it's the acceptance of the group, the accolades for the show or maybe unique last night because his home town really did show him a lot of love (we really did! YAY). Just my humble opinion, YMMV. Also of note, Brian was visually touched by the love he got. The crowd would not quit cheering when he came forward to speak the first time. It would start to die down, and then start up again. Very good later for Roger, too, but no where near the same. The crowd was really, really appreciative. We had a great view of the whole floor. Of course they were all standing and IN TO IT, everyone, through the whole thing. Often (at the right times) the whole stadium was singing along and the cheering and clapping for the encore never trailed off as far as I could tell. Only blip in the final whooping and cheering was when they started playing God Save the Queen. We Americans didn't know if we should stand still and be quiet or what. But we weren't done cheering and the lull was brief and all hell broke loose again as they left the stage. LMAO
Can't believe this got so long. If you're still reading, thanks for letting me re-live it just a little bit. One last thing though, leaving the parking lot I saw a large "social media" message sign lit up that advised folks what hash tags to use on Twitter etc. I Tweeted that Adam and the band were great and the Forum was fabulous. The Forum Tweeted me back a Thank you with 3 exclamation points!!! My DH and friend that rode with us were duly impressed. I'm such a techie. LMAO FOFL
As the Jersey Boys would say.....OH WHAT A NIGHT!!!!
