.... "I Want to Break Free" -- was Roger's idea, not Freddie's, and it was supposed to be satirical, not cross dressing. It was inspired by the the Rolling Stones record cover, and I would not call it "campy". Certainly not anything to do with Freddie being gay. (I am not sure what they were thinking when they did this video but it was a mistake from a commercial standpoint.) .... I wouldn't say a mistake...it was meant for the UK and their audience there being a parody of their biggest soap opera of the time Coronation Street. A mistake for the American audience....maybe, but I don't feel they had to cater specifically to them...*shrug* In 1984-5 at least he still came out with the fake tits.... Queen was headed back up in North America in early 1984 with "Radio Ga Ga" mostly because of the music video and MTV. Queen released "I Want To Break Free" music video when the US music world was being dominated by MTV -- 1984. And when Queen's entire promotional focus was to repair the financial mess that the US failure of "Hot Space" caused. For perspective, in 1984 North American was 63% of music revenues and about 70% of profits. They did not do it for the UK. And, while it is considered a "flop" in the US, IWTBF still sold twice as many units in the US vs. the UK. They did not plan to create a video that was banned in the US by MTV and a song that most US radio stations were afraid to play. They wanted to create a video that would prove they were creative and that would keep them on MTV as it was shifting more to rhythmic dance music and away from classic rock completely. Cross cultural humor is a difficult thing and a spoof of a show no one has ever seen, is 4 guy cross dressing and playing house, but even as a spoof that is not camp. Regarding Freddie wearing a bra in Rio -- 1. It showed he really did not know much about Latin America in 1984, and 2. Always seemed a bit off to me, and 3. I am glad he did not get get hit when the audience started throwing things at him, and 4. Is not camp. ** The whole concert of "Camp" style is American -- and Freddie was very British in his approach to performance. Bette Midler 1970's = camp, Liza Minnelli = not camp. But a great female impersonator doing Liza = could be high camp! Here is the Urban Dictionary definition of "campy." campy adj. being so extreme that it has an amusing and perversely sophisticated appeal. |
