Aleks @aleks_kv 4m The perfect merger: Queen + Adam Lambert www.bizjournals.com/boston/blog/bottom_line/2014/07/the-perfect-merger-queen-adam-lambert.html?ana=twt … via @bostonbiznews
Greg Walsh Associate Managing Editor- Boston Business Journal EmailOn the business side of the equation, Queen + Adam Lambert adds up. Look at it on paper or better yet in concert, it’s the perfect business plan: Merge the “classic rock” crowd with “American Idol” tweens and teens and their moms and you can’t lose. There were no losers at last night’s capacity show at the TD Garden (there’s no time for them, after all). Yes, Adam Lambert is no Freddie Mercury — but then, who is? — and Queen’s original bassist John Deacon has retired, but 50 percent of Queen is better than no Queen at all. In all due respect to bands like The Eagles, Black Keys and Pitbull, all of whom are visiting the Garden in the near future, none of them can deliver the goods like Queen. I’m not necessarily talking about the songs, although Queen’s catalog is chock-fill of anthemic nuggets tailor-made for the big rock show. No, I’m talking about showmanship. More than anything, Queen was put on this planet to entertain — as they boasted on their mission-statement song from 1978, “Let Me Entertain You.” Yes, to thrill you they’ll use any device: video, lights, lasers, simulated pyrotechnics, dry ice (white & black!) moving stage parts and more, more, more. While the band’s penchant for bombast and spectacle has been a source of critical dismissal in the past, today it is a sighting to behold like a rare bird. Bands who put on a “show” — like a Queen, Aerosmith or Motley Crue — are going by way of the dinosaurs as the economics of the music business muddles in the tar pits. Which is why this tour is so important: It shows a future generation of rockers how it should be done before it’s too late.
