I actually think Boy George was specifically referring to the history of the US audiences accepting gay British performers but not gay American performers.

If you look at the 20th century......and he is a "20th Century Boy".

Bowie, Freddie, Elton, Marc Bolan, Boy George, Robert John Arthur "Rob" Halford, Sir Noël Peirce Coward, etc. etc. -- all British.

And the American equivalents are Jobriath, Ricky Wilson (B-52's), Billy Preston and ???  I can't think of anyone else -- and certainly no one who achieve the same level of fame as the British artists.

I can think of one great out composer: Billy Strayhorn, but Cole Porter resorted to spending time in Paris and getting married to a woman. 

LGB sexual activity became decriminalized in the UK from 1967 to 1982. It was illegal in most of the US until 2003. Attitudes are changing rapidly in the US and I think if Adam was 19 now he would have an easier path but he might not be as famous.

I think that things have finally changed enough that A3 will be judged on its own merits.
