Oh... Seoulmate. It should be illegal to post pictures like this without a warning. I just popped in during lunch break, and I literally sat staring at the screen for half a minute before I realized that it wasn't the time nor the place to do that. Now I'm home, and certainly going to take the time to appreciate today's decoration. Thank you. |

I made a video for Cuckoo. It includes scenes from Velvet Goldmine. A familiarity with the main characters and plot helps. (I am working on another edit that doesn't have VG in it. Should be coming soon. Ish.  ) Big thanks to aleks, Q3 and kryptoman68 for their comments and encouragement. Enjoy! I am open to comments and concrit. ...This is excellent! I love the inclusion of the Velvet Goldmine clips! Can't imagine another version any better. Off to tweet it and RT Mys*&@^#r and others. Good job! |

OMG, I'm dying a little right now... I didn't expect it to get this much attention so quickly... Attention is good and I want Adam to see it, but at the same time I'm all like No dying allowed!! You have to stick around and keep making awesome vids.  No, really, blaky... I seriously bow down to your vid-making skills! And when I hear Cuckoo again, I get so damned angry and frustrated that it was never a single. Makes me wanna PUNCH SOMEBODY!!  |

I've been enjoying MSG multicam of ILOG - and especially the run at 2'55-3'01. In my mind it connects to medieval choir repertoire that use old keys that I find both soothing and uplifting. Maybe it's not really any mixolydian scale practice but nevertheless beautiful and fits to the song; anyway, I think of it as an example of Adam's musicality and ability to adapt to the sensibility of the music (ie not repeating run patterns but finding something suitable). He does use the same kind of treatment in his melismas throughout to colour the melody (f.ex. 'God' at 2'48-2'51), delightful! Misolyidan scale took me to a guitar site and I don't see how anyone learns to play. So complicated makes me appreciate both Adam and Dr. Bri even more. I have learned more about music from Atop than I knew existed. I'm sorry if I led you astray but happy if it made you realize something new - almost everything has been discovered already in theory but to use it appropriately outside of classical music often makes a difference, it pops up and the songs stick to memory (and just might be more pleasing to our ears if we appreciate the different element). I just threw the mixolydian in there as an example/reference because I've learned that it's used a lot in rock, blues, country and jazz music (and very suitable above Major or Major 7 chord - and believing ILOG is in Major). Unfortunately I can't distinguish these things by ear, I only meant a different sound environment than the most. There are several scales: ionian, lydian, mixolydian, frygian etc. BTW our Finnish old music is often based on pentatonic scale which we are accustomed to and maybe for that reason more susceptible to like these odd variations. In this regard I think we have a lot in common with lilly (re Auld Lang Syne - but also 'Ol' Man River' and 'Those Were The Days' for All in the Family... Summertime uses pentatonic minor). Googling these I found some examples. Ionian (=Major): 'With or Without You' by U2. Mixolydian: 'Norwegian Wood' by the Beatles (always loved that one...), 'Sweet home Alabama' by Lynyrd Skynyrd, 'Sweet Child O'Mine' by Guns'n'Roses and 'I'll Be There ForYou', the tune for tv series Friends. And for frygian I got: Intro to 'Dark Chest Of Wonders' by Nightwish, 'The Man Who Sold The World' by David Bowie, 'La Fiesta' by Chick Corea, 'Solea' by Miles Davis and 'Olé' by John Coltrane. They say 'The Trooper' by Iron Maiden, 'I Shot The Sheriff' by Bob Marley/Eric Clapton and 'Somebody Told Me' by The Killers are aiolic (aiolian? = minor). And so forth. Ok, enough of musicology ramblings. But I would like to know if the ILOG riff is in fact something like this - or am I fond of it just because it's beautiful? Not that it matters much, I enjoy it anyway... ETA I have to add dorian examples that I missed: 'Eleanor Rigby' by The Beatles, 'Wicked Game' by Chris Isaak, chord progression in 'Oye Como Va' by Tito Puente/Carlos Santana, and trads like 'Drunken Sailor' and 'Scarborough Fair', also 'Chameleon' by Herbie Hancock and 'So What' by Miles Davis. |
