The "death" of album covers

An album cover can be a very important branding statement about a recording artist. During the golden age of album covers (1967-1980), the album cover was the ultimate visual representation of an artist’s music.

The Beatles made major statement with album covers ranging from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) to the White Album (1968). Rolling Stones gave us Sticky Fingers (1971) and Exile on Main St. (1972). Bowie turned his covers into works of art. And who doesn’t remember the laser-rainbow pyramid-prism from Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon (1973).

The importance of album covers diminished when CD’s replaced vinyl and packaging was so small that the packaging had to be simplified. But the real culprit in the “death of album covers” was music videos and the launch of MTV on August 1, 1981. The broad use of multi-media promotion (videos) made cover art almost an afterthought.

The album cover returns[/color]

In the very odd way of cycles (pun intended), the advent of digital marketing and the internet has made album cover art important again. MTV was a push media – the programmers pushed the music out to the audience. But the Internet is a pull media – the viewer selects what they want to see – and it is a visual media. The Internet requires icon that ID an artist and their music – quickly and definitively. Artists need to create images that are easily recognizable.

So the big question: What will Adam do for his next album cover?[/color]

My prediction is that it will not be campy – at all. But it will be surprising and generate a lot of press. And even it is just a parody of the “angsty alt rocker cover” it will generate press for not being Glam. So check back here in September or so when Adam reveals his new cover and I will post the score --- FYE cover press mentions vs. Adam #2 press mentions. The press storm for FYE will be hard to beat but I am pretty sure that he will come up with a way to do it.

iBert: For All Your Stanning Needs*

Apple has announced an exciting new application for their popular iPhone product, geared specifically to fans of pop singer Adam Lambert. Designed to meet the needs of the Glambert on the go, with features that make stanning more pleasurable than ever before.

Features include:

RealLife-Alert – for those times when you’ve fallen (down the rabbit hole) and can’t get up. Pre-set the maximum time you will allow yourself to stan online, and when you have reached the limit, this feature automatically logs you out of Twitter and all Adam-related sites, and a stern voice recites the names of your family members to help you remember who they are. You will not be allowed to log back on until you take a picture of an actual prepared meal or a load of clean, folded laundry.

PicCheck – scans pics that you try to right-click-save, and notifies you if you already have them. Also alerts you if your Adam pic collection exceeds the number of pics you have of your own family and delivers a verbal rebuke. This feature can of course be turned off. After all, you can look at your actual family members in real life—pictures of them are redundant, and take up valuable hard drive space.

BeepAStan – alerts you when you need to report to the fandom ASAP. Emergency events include a tweet from Adam, a WITWIAL sighting, or a new piece of flail-worthy news. Includes an option to send yourself an “emergency” phone call or text with an excuse to get yourself out of whatever real life activities in which you are engaged.

CommentGenerator – connects to your Google alerts and automatically posts a comment on any new Adam-related article. Scans the article for key words to determine whether it is favorable to Adam or not and applies the appropriately-worded comment. For positive press, a friendly note praising the writer and his/her insight and brilliance. For a negative article, your comment will deliver a few snarky, sarcasm-laced sentences questioning the writer’s judgment, sanity, writing skills, and citizenship status and include a link to Fantasy Springs WLL.

MoodRing – press your finger on the screen upon waking, and the app will read your mood and set your ringtone to the appropriate Adam song for the day. Feeling emo? Loaded Smile. Full of joy? If I Had You. Hung over and doing the walk of shame? Soaked.

GeoStan – allows you to enter Adam’s known coordinates, provides map of the area (with hippest nightclubs & shopping areas highlighted), and compiles a Twitter list of local stans to stalk follow. When Adam is outside the U.S., will provide information on local culture and customs, and translates flailing and squeeing to and from any known languages. MeetNGreetr – this feature allows you to pre-record yourself greeting Adam, saying your name and making a few fun and clever comments. Just hit Play when you are in Adam’s presence, and you can stare at him in a daze with your mouth soundlessly moving, while the recording impresses him with your wit and poise.
