I am sure it was contained to a point because they settled quickly and quietly " behind closed doors" so they wouldn't draw the attention. Had it gotten ugly you know the press would have been circling, looking for blood. Have to admit there was something about that song that was bugging me. Did not connect it to the Petty song tho..hmmm ..I always heard "Stand By Me" when it came on. Eta...another song that triggers that feeling..is "Happy".... It feels like a speeded up " Horse with no name" by America.. Drives me nuts It's always funny what melodies and chords morph into other songs in your head. I did see the similarities between Tom Petty's song and Sam Smith's song, but there are so many other song combos that sound the same in my head. In fact, whenever I hear WWRY, my brain starts singing the opening verse of Armageddon It by Def Leppard. Hey, I was a teenager when hair metal rock bands were a thing, don't judge me!  |

I don't get this....the songs don't sound alike to me except perhaps in the phrasing of "stay with me" and "I won't back down" but other than that, nothing alike IMO.
eta: I must have bad ears or something because I don't hear the similarities. Some people said Kelly's new single Heartbeat Song sounds like Jimmy Eat World's In the Middle, which I also don't hear the similarities too.

I could immediately hear the similarities without even speeding up SS Stay With Me, and I had never heard the Tom Petty song! |

I agree- I've heard far more egregious similarities in many other songs. Especially the one Cheeks referenced
The link to the article posted few pages back said that they've settled out of court and they settled it quickly. So maybe they realized the similarity too otherwise they would go to court to prove it wrong. And the press would not do good for Sam and his team.
or they settled it to save attorney fees over something that at the end of the day really doesn't matter and would have been blown out of proportion by the media. So Sam gave Tom writing credit and royalties...most fans don't know or care about this. This isn't going to impact Sam in any way whatsoever so his team was smart to settle it rather than fight over something petty (no pun intended).

I think the phrasing/melody is similar but overall I think they sound different enough that Sam shouldn't have had to pay royalties to Petty. So that's why it sounded like I'd heard it before. Of course I wasn't hearing the Tom Petty one I was hearing Stand by Me by Ben E King. |

Queen + Adam Lambert, nearly all concert, missed Brian May Solo due to Battery change.Some parts were edited due to folks getting up and down for beer and the loo. The concert was awesome, we had a top night.
