I just finished watching (parts) of last night's AI. UPRISING is one of my favorite songs so I was interested in James' rendition. It's not like it was horrible, though the drummers in band hats were a little weird and the screams sucked, and I find it hard to explain how I feel about his voice, but let me try. First of all, I know Adam has me spoiled, but all I could think while listening to James was there is no depth in the notes. The closest example is a bowl of ice cream. Adam is a huge, heaping tablespoonful that you put in your mouth and savor the taste, the texture, the body, the chill as it slides down your throat. James is like running your tongue around the bowl to get what is coating the bottom. It is the same flavor, but it is lacking so much of what makes ice cream a special treat. I read your post just after I finished posting this over in the Grassy Knoll thread at Television Without Pity: I wanted to add a comparison with Adam, since he doesn't have to use wild staging to distract from vocal limitations, but I didn't want it to seem as if I was just an Adam fan who felt threatened by the competition. But it's still a fact. Adam's vocals are always impeccable, whether surrounded by flame and glitter, or just pouring into the room from a CD player.

I don't mind that James thinks doing "Adam things" is the way to go. Or that he tries to mix it up a bit. What I am getting tired of is the judges not calling him on his vocals. Last night, he lost the song when he was in his lower register. And the wails, hurt my ears! But, not one of the judges said a thing. I thought the exact same thing...gets me riled up ...when they do not seem to be fair about who sang well or NOT! I read this on Popwatch -- from a person who was in the studio listening... then compared it to what we heard on TV. The dissonance between live and tv.. this must be the dry feed that some of you talked about when when Adam sang Aftermath on Idol...not that it was bad but just not as atmospheric. (If that was what some meant) EDIT : I loved Aftemath on Idol --not as knowledegable as some about sound, tv, or what the difference would have been --but I still replay that every day on my tv. Popwatch -exerpt edit again...sorry have not been posting for a while and forgot to put in the original link! popwatch.ew.com/2011/04/21/american-idol-on-the-scene-top-7-performance/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ew%2Fpopwatch+%28Entertainment+Weekly%2FEW.com%27s%3A+PopWatch%29&utm_content=Google+ReaderExample 56,329 on the difference between live audio and televised audio on American Idol: There was pretty much nothing about James’ performance of Muse’s “Uprising” that didn’t work like gangbusters inside the Idoldome, especially, yes, how it sounded. In the studio, the Durbs’ mic was evenly mixed in with the band and backup singers, and it was a pretty much perfect sonic marriage. On TV, his mic was, as always, far more forward in the audio mix, which is simply not how that kind of performance is best heard — which is to say, the judges did hear a different performance than you did. Must be the judges heard a drowned out/blurred version versus pure vocals!!! HAPPY... HAPPY BIRTHDAYS to all!

I wonder if the judges go back & watch the performances on tape? I recalled Simon's comment about watching it back on tape, and he either said I was wrong somethin' or wasn't bad watching in back..he did correct his comment to the contestants sometimes.
If these judges watched it back, and be honest to themselves, they would know how wrong they were to said James' vocal was the best last night and so was Casey's.

I'm sure the judges hear the sound different than we are, but how come Simon was pretty on spot when it comes to critique the contestant's voice as I remembered.

Adam is a PR person's dream client, isn't he? Look how he generates his own press!! That new facial hair gave the media an easy headline and a reason to use his name and pic prominently. I'm still not lovin' the goatee.... think it ages him, suave as it is. But I'm sure it will be shaved soon - and we'll have another headline. Hee! The gorgeous smile on the red carpet is something different too, isn't it? I've heard the paps scream for him to smile on zillions of occasions and he usually insists on giving them his "model pose" - of which he's a master *sighs* - he rarely gives them a full out grin like he did last night. I'm thinkin' he's pretty happy indeed. Outfit sure played up his long lean legs...again, *sighs* ....and more birthdays!! So festive around here! HAPPY BDAY CindyM, flynnsgirl, francis!!!
