Stone Cold Crazy
Talon EntryPlayed actually before it was recorded - in fact it was reportedly the first song the band played live. When it came out on SHA, it was played through 1977 and then dropped. It was brought back for 1984 and then dropped again. It was played sporadically a few times afterwards and then brought back for QAL. A BUNCH of people have covered this. Both studio and live... In the studio: Eleven featuring Josh Homme (of Queens of the Stone Age) Enuff Z'nuff Robin Zander Metallica NOW...WITH Queen Jeff Scott Soto James Hetfield (and Tony Iommi) QAL The studio ones are all decent, here and there Eleven's a bit dreary, Enuff Znuff a bit too hair metally. Metallica really nails the aggression of it. The live with Queen? JSS does a decent job (even if the quality is bad). Adam has gotten much better at it than I ever thought he would have gotten but this track seems made for James really. VERDICT: JAMES HETFIELD

Dear Friends
Talon Entry
Never performed by the band or covered live as far as I know...BUT an act did cover it for a cover album - Def Leppard but sung by bassist Rick Savage instead of Joe Elliot. Quite an interesting version - no patch on the original but still not too shabby... VERDICT RICK

Before I move on...>I edited in Nevermore to the Seven Seas Of Rhye post as I had forgotten that Extreme had done a brief version during their 2008 tour. Now... Misfire
Talon Entry
John Deacon's first writing credit - it was never performed live by the band. It was covered by an indie artist named Neko Case. A fun little jaunt and by default... VERDICT: Neko Case

In The Lap Of The Gods...Revisited
Talon Entry
Played live through 1977 until We Are The Champions replaced it as the closer. It was brought out of the mothballs for the 1986 tour by Brian and then retired again til QAL 2014. In a one off for Freddie's birthday, the SAS band played the track with Brian tackling lead vocals. As far as Queen + or covers...we have two entries. Marc Martel & QE or QAL Marc Martel & Queen ExtravaganzaQueen + Adam LambertThis is a tough one. Marc is great, Adam is great. They both hit different niches. I do think Adam's is a bit more dramatic and his vocal a bit more...effortless SO...I'll give him the nod. Verdict: ADAM

Death On two legs
Talon Entry
Played live by the band through 1981 and then occasionally afterwards Freddie would use the intro as a segue. Never played live with any Queen + but it was covered... Dream Theater
Dream Theater are definitely weened from the progressive rock side of the band. And they are damn sure musically skilled and thus deliver a very skilled cover! Jeff Scott Soto Another good version by Jeff. I like James' clear viper voice a bit better on this track though. Verdict: Dream Theater (James La Brie)

Ok I'll do a two-fer here. Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon
Talon Entry
Played live by Queen in 1975 and 1976 before being dropped...not really a live song to be honest, but a funny interlude. It was covered only by Marc Martel in Queen Extravaganza Pretty spot on! VERDICT: Marc MartelNext the big Roger track, I'm In Love With My Car. For a long time this was the only track performed that was not sung by Freddie (on lead vocals - he'd help on backgrounds). They played it through 1981 before dropping it. WHen The Cross went out on tour it was the only Queen song they played at first and they played it throughout their touring career. Roger played it at all of his solo shows and when Queen + Paul Rodgers joined forces Roger played it at all of those gigs before dropping it for QAL. Talon EntryA bunch have covered it.... Jeff Scott Soto - THIS is great. Perfect for his voice...Although still doesn't win - Jeff's had a bit tough despite singing Queen very well! Mother Love Bone - This is the band that spawned Pearl Jam as well as Soundgarden. It was a huge local band in Seattle until the founder/cult hero Andrew Wood died three days before their debut album was released. A bit sloppy but energetic. Valensia - Again another early Queen cover by the Dutch singer. He's a bit too smooth for this track if I'm honest. Kip Winger & friends from a Queen tribute album - A bit overproduced. Not bad - but it sounds very 80s... Queen Extravaganza and Tyler Warren
WoW! Everyone was talking about Marc Martel and even Jeff Scott Soto with the QE, but when I saw QE, I was floored by Tyler! The drummer for QE was well picked it seems as he too has a helluva rocking voice - even while drumming. Very authentic. Verdict: TYLER WARREN of Queen Extravaganza

You're My Best Friend
Talon Entry
Played live in a medley until 1980 when it was dropped indefinitely until Brian did a snippet of it in London during QAL in 2012. Covered by a few people though never performed with Queen... Jeff Scott Soto - A nice version - As usual a very solid version. That's Jeff in a nutshell - he does a VERY solid job at all the tracks - nothing spectacular though but consistently good. Jason Scheff - Known best as the bassist/vocalist who replaced Peter Cetera in Chicago - This is a very nice polished version. Nothing wrong with it but the other two are better vocals. Marc Martel - With Queen Extravaganza. Wow. This is spot on. The band is great, and Marc's version is beautifully done. I can't see it being beaten by anyone. This just fits. VERDICT: Marc Martel

EDITED IN - I forgot George Michael
Talon Entry
Jeff Scott Soto - The harmoines here are really spot on and his lead vocal is smooth and strong. Ingram Hill - Not a well known band and indeed I think being signed to Hollywood Records was what got them on the tribute album in the first place. BUT it is a solid version. Nothing spectacular though. A little bit lifeless if I'm honest. George Michael - One of the "other" performances George did at the show. He said it was special to him as it was a song he used to busk on the underground. A bit too polished on the vocals if I'm honest. For the record this was also done as Queen + Foo Fighters...kind of. Brian and Roger joined the Foos and they did this song, but Brian still sang lead so I didn't put it here. Verdict: Jeff Scott Soto

Indeed! He really is a great journeyman of rock. He can handle many catalogues and do them quite well...but never seems to shine on his own music. BUT there certainly are far worse career paths!
