[grins] And for the somewhat anti-Twitter Devil's Advocate counterargument: I personally have a very tenuous, and sometimes uncomfortable, relationship with Twitter. It is both too searchable, and not searchable enough. Anything you say is open to the world. Whether you're comfortable with that is a consideration. For work reasons, my stanning life and friends are completely separate from anything that can be traced professionally. Not interested in the slightest in breaching that metaphorical brick wall. I don't WANT to be traced, and I don't want any conversations I have with my ATOP buddies to be easily attributed to various RL handles. Realize that anything you say on Twitter is like having a loud conversation in public. Anyone can listen in, whether you know them or not. Now, I like the fact that @hoppersskippers can be read by ATOP peeps whether they specifically follow me or not, so I haven't protected my account. That said, I won't say anything on Twitter that I care that someone who doesn't know me - or worse, someone who does - can trace back 6 months after I've said it. Its very difficult to reliably erase your footsteps on Twitter (stuff gets captured, etc). That issue doesn't bother most people. However, it definitely bothers me. Plus, dammit, I find it hard to think in 140 characters. ;D In summary, Twitter can be a wonderful tool. However, each individual must decide on their own how they want to utilize it. Before you get started, KNOW the security issues with Twitter, and decide on your personal comfort level with it based on your comfort level with mass communication. [steps off soapbox] Hoppers, they are actually one and the same as far as searchability goes. What we say here is no more confidential and non-Google-searchable than what we say on Twitter. The difference is, you make an account that can't necessarily be tracked to your personal identity. My stan account has no identifiers to who I am in RL. I do not use my photo. I might make reference to my RL, but it's in general terms and can actually be one of hundreds of different people. If you use a gmail account, you can create an anonymous identity. Sure, granted, you can be searched through IP addresses, but you can be here too. There is no difference. The only difference here is that we ~feel we might be having a personal conversation in the bedroom while the majority of convo is going on in the living room (Twitter), but just as many people could be listening to our convo here as well. Yes and no. I think fewer people know about ATOP versus the larger population on Twitter . I feel much more confident that I can permanently edit / erase my comments here than on Twitter. If I decide to talk in Chat, my conversation is gone once the room empties, and I can see everyone in the room with me when I'm there. Now, if someone was really motivated, could they look me up on ATOP? Of course they can! There ain't nutin' on the internet that's truly secure, and I don't expect it to be. However, based on all considerations, I feel more comfortable chitchatting here on ATOP, with people I know who all have a common interest, versus the wide ocean which is Twitter.
