Yes, I think the guy was nitpicking to the nth degree and has a very high opinion of himself. He actually went back on what he originally said which was that Adam's voice cracked at .55.

Thanks for the link. I didn't realize there were podcasts of From the Top. It's a great show. I used to be able to see it on my local PBS station, but I don't know where it went.

You know, one of the things I love most about watching Adam, is witnessing the obvious joy he emits when singing. It struck me recently how disappointingly rare it is to see singers exhibit that sort of happiness while performing. After a reaaaaaaaaally long day today, someone forwarded me this vid. The girl in it is probably now rather elderly, but she's the first person I've seen who glows like Adam when singing. Her name didn't strike any recognition in me, but I guessing she was likely quite well known (in Europe?) at one time. Oh my god Hoppers!... I haven't been here for a while and just checked in, and was gonna comment on how open and lovely this girl's face is when I listened some more and suddenly realized that this song is the Italian version of a song my dad always used to sing to us kids when we were little. Researching it now I find it was a hit in the sixties, so maybe this just outs me as the spring chicken I am, but I'd never heard the version I've included below--when I hear it I hear it in my dad's wonderful and somewhat gruff baritone. And now you have me all nostalgic and emotional. Thanks for that. (I miss Austin--my parents live there and I miss seeing them every week!) ETA: sorry, this comment really doesn't belong in the Vocal Masterclass thread, lol. oops.

MWP, you must be a young'n. Those Were the Days is/was kind of one of those classic tunes. Thanks guys, I haven't heard it in a very long time.
Since hubby just got the word that he has to go to Ft. Lauderdale today for the weekend and Shadow and I get to go too, I'm posting this Buffet song. I can't wait to go back home - even if only for a little while.
Tryin' to Reason with Hurricane Season. "Strollin' down the avenue that's known as A1A". That's the coastal road right on the ocean that runs the entire east coast of Florida. Damn, I miss it. Especially the yearly trip on my friends sailboat in the Bahamas - pure bliss. It's a damn shame that it's only 40 degrees outside. But in a few hours, I'll be under the palm trees in tropical weather. Yes! Sorry to ramble, it's just that I hate fall and winter in the northeast.

Cassie...re: the Queen songs. It seemed to me that when Adam sang all 3 songs there was a heavier or more precise vibratto in his voice. I do not hear that same fast pulsing in his recordings on Glamnation Live. Did he purposely sing w/ a quicker vibratto? Is this something he controls or was it because he was using him chest voice and going for power? DO you understand what I'm trying to say??

Is this something he controls or was it because he was using him chest voice and going for power? DO you understand what I'm trying to say?? Yes, I understand you. I believe that most everything Adam does vocally is purposeful. Yes, he does have very fine control of his vibrato. He can sing in a pure, straight tone, with a barely there vibrato for added warmth, with a legitimate musical theater vibrato, and with a heavy, powerful vibrato like we heard with Queen. To me there was something almost operatic about his voice with Queen. And, for me, it fit perfectly. Here's why. Those songs are HUGE. Bombastic. Arena rousers. They need a HUGE voice to cut thru and remain in the forefront. A Bruno Mars type vocal would be buried and humiliated. Freddy had (forgive me in advance to Freddy fans everywhere) a brittle, piercing, sharp tone when he sang these monsters, that made his voice prominent. While Adam could imitate that if he chose, it wouldn't use all the richness and fullness he commands. It would be "copying" Freddy, not performing his own interpretation. Instead, Adam went for OTT pop/opera. Full out, full resonance, and with that legitimate, heavy vibrato that pops his voice on top of the backing music. A tenor aria so to speak. I don't think for a minute that Adam was deliberately trying to promote himself above Queen, but the effect was a musical statement that here is a voice that can not only hold its own with these HUGE songs, but can demonstrate a power and richness that NO OTHER VOICE IN POP/ROCK TODAY possesses. For me, this was Adam pulling out all the stops, using everything he had, and taking it to the next level. And all of it purposeful, well planned and rehearsed in his mind, under his complete control while at the same time, living in the moment. Some folks have commented that he sang in a way that he would not be able to sustain nightly on a tour. That such vocals would blow out his voice if used routinely. The point is, this was a one-time, balls to the wall performance. I didn't hear anything that I thought was damaging his voice, but, I agree that this level of singing is not for everyday use. Just like an opera tenor does not sing a whole opera like a showpiece aria, nor sing such arias every night. Can you tell that Adam blew my mind with that performance?

cassie... thank you so much for your analysis. I just listened to this video posted on p.16 (main thread) by hoopla and it shows from an audience perspective since it is a fan-made video. Per hoopla it came from LAMBOSESSED'S YOUTUBE PLAYLIST OF EMA FAN VIDS I can really feel the power and richness of his voice. You are right that anybody with less powerful voice (vibrato included), it will drown out. Here is what I'm talking about. The fan recording this video is in the back...too far away.... but Adam's voice has no problem filling in the arena. I got goose bumps because I feel like I was there... ETA: IMO, some people may call it screaming but Adam was adjusting his voice to fit the venue - a voice so splendidly rich, powerful, and magnetic ...

Thank you cassie.
I constantly vacillate between whose voice I like the most. I think in large part my affection (and often preference) for Freddie is layered with equal parts nostalgia, grief, and the power of having a long and storied history with his voice- his was the soundtrack of my life. It's sometimes hard to leave that behind me and embrace a new voice with the same depth of feeling as the sheer pathos involved in my listening to a Queen track is at times completely overwhelming.
Fortunately I do not have to choose- I can adore them both equally.
To read objective interpretations of what I am hearing is most useful in helping me understand what qualities I am responding to and why I feel as I do. You are a treasure!
