I also don't think that MM works more with females, or does so for any gender specific reason. I think that MM is so in demand that he can totally choose whom he would like to work with. The fact, that he not only wrote 1 song for Adam, but WANTED to really work with him on a whole album (!), shows how much potential MM sees in Adam. Adam earned himself that respect.
With potential I mean first and foremost the potential to make great music, do something unique and noteworthy, and have it sung by a great vocalist. I don't think that Adam is a shoo-in to run up the single charts, and I am pretty sure that MM has sorted that one out too. But Adam gives MM a chance to stretch his song-writing boundaries, and that must be interesting for somebody who has kind of seen and done it all. And nope, this is not about range, even though range sure can help.
Adam can emote in a song, in ways, none of the people up and down the present charts can. That is assuming the song-writing quality actually allows for such emotion to come out.
Adam can interpret a song, that is assuming the song truly has something to say. Adam can sing a more demanding melody, be it demanding in range, melodic flow, dynamic, or anything else. Those are interesting qualities for a song-writer to work with.
Adam had some interesting songs on TSP. But there was room for growth. Hooks were missing in key songs, some lyrics were over-wrought, the flow of the album was probably a bit bumpy, even before RCA threw that monkey-wrench of NCOE into the mix.
But Adam's album showed tons of potential to anyone willing to look. Nothing was boring, his songs sounded unique, he did have something to say, he did dig deep. There was a lot there, but as with the work of a young talent, you see the quality, but also the room for improvement.
Many will say, Adam is not young, and he is in the business since he was 10, why is he still learning?
a) Adam has been performing since he was 10, he has not been songwriting since then, in fact he did not seek out songwriting at all, when he was young
b) He is on a unique path, both in the talent he brings into the mix, and the type of music he aspires to make
c) He comes with ideas, with something to say, more than with a musical vision of how he wants to package the thoughts
d) Adam needs to be paired with the best, because mediocre songwriters (Dr Luke, looking at you) pull him down instead of lifting him up.
e) The market needs to be ready for him.
I am very hopeful for this combination to be right this time. I think we will get a very interesting quality album, at the least. Whether it will be a hit in the marketplace, the future will have to tell, but I am optimistic for this album.
