Adam Lambert Reveals Cover Art to New Album 'The Original High'

Anticipation for the "American Idol" alum's collaboration with Max Martin is building, with first single "Ghost Town" slated to go to radio on April 21.

The wait is almost over for Glamberts everywhere as the new Adam Lambert album inches its way to release.

On Sunday, April 19, the man himself revealed the cover art for The Original High via multiple social media accounts -- a stark, black-and-white close-up of the singer's face. First single "Ghost Town" is slated to go to radio on April 21 with a late-spring/early-summer release date eyed for the full length.

The Original High marks a full collaboration between the American Idol alum and Swedish hitmakers Max Martin and Shellback. Indeed, an early listen to several tracks on the album reveals the duo's penchant for pop wizardry, especially on songs like the mid-tempo "Ghost Town," which nods to Katy Perry and Kiesza in its use of 90s synth, and fellow Swedes Peter Bjorn and John in its embrace of the whistle as hook.

Elsewhere on the record, Lambert showcases his signature soaring wail as he reaches his own personal high -- note-wise -- occasionally stepping in with an impressive falsetto over a dance-y beat. Nile Rodgers-esque guitars appear throughout as funk stylings of the don't-believe-me-just-watch variety. Hints of Robyn and Erasure abound, and while we can't reveal too much more, know that Lambert did all the background vocals.

Adam Lambert's career needed an exorcist after his departure from RCA Records and 'Ghost Town' is it. Trespassing gave him his biggest success to date, but that label's shoddy promotion caused it to slink off earlier than expected. Worse still, they wanted to follow up his number one album with a covers LP in a cheap attempt to cash in on the former Idol's name. There was a lot riding on Adam's new chapter and he knew it, which is why he recruited big-name producers and went on long writing sessions for his third album. Not only did it work, but it looks as though it's transformed him into the pop star he was always meant to be.

'Ghost Town' will be a definitive moment in his career because this is him at his purest. There's no drama behind the scenes and there are no silly games to play – this is all about the music he wants to make. He fuses a dark house melody with bleak lyrics about death and heartbreak, creating a minimalist pop song that's both sexy and stark. It sounds familiar in part because of that tried-and-tested whistling hook, but this is a fresh new approach that will please newcomers and his most devoted fans. If this lead single is any indication, Adam's music could be haunting the charts for the rest of 2015.
