Thanks, NoAngel. I felt liked I'd drowned the party there for a sec. I sure hope I haven't. And yes, that was an awful day. Like I said, I was in DC, and trying to get through to family in NYC, and meanwhile, my family, in Europe, was trying to get through to me. A few weeks later I moved to the UK for grad school, and I must say the warm, sympathetic, loving way Americans were treated by Europeans in the months following that day was really moving to me. This board reminds me of that.

there's a grade school down there. all those kids were in the thick of it. i think of those kind of things. this relieves some of those memories.
sorry. this is a celebratory night. it's not the answer for world peace. but it's certainly celebratory. i'm a ny'er and i was there. it's a celebratory night. i will not let anyone rain on it.
edit: 1:30 am and i'm still getting texts. one of my friends is downtown. i should have gone too.

I am a Canadian and for some that may mean I should not speak. But I was living and teaching in the US on 9/11. In my Communication classes that first week or so, we talked of the importance of communication; of the rhetorical importance of terms and terminology; and we talked of backward-looking justice and forward looking justice.
You are right to be concerned midwifespal, in my opinion, when you comment on Obama's use of backward looking justice as that is the way to keep a war going.....I hope in the next few days Obama finds a way to temper that rhetoric with a more foreward looking stance or the whole world will suffer.
I remember how apalled and angry Americans were when they saw videos of Iraqi's singing and dancing in the streets after 9/11. Is this really the images we want to send to them? How can we claim to have a better way if we act the same as them? I know bin Laden had to go...but we do not have to sing on his grave. And I sincerely hope and trust they will return his body to his family for burial, immediately, or there really will be some repurcussions!
very fearful.....I am watching the TV now as it shows young men celebrating on the streats of Seattle with their drinks in their hands as if it were a hockey game win.....

The hope of a secure and livable world...is neither automatic nor inevitable..Every step toward this goal requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals. I am very grateful for our men and women in the Armed Forces and the Intelligence community and for our Leadership- President Obama . The pain of 9/11 will never go away... this news only tempers it... and give us hope for a secure and livable world. In MEMORIAM 9/11

This is a very powerful photo. No matter how much I worry about tomorrow and revenge, today is a day of relief.

I am so friggin happy right now! I lost a family member in Iraq, he was only 21. This brings some closure as he joined the military right after 9/11. Our family lost a wonderful young man who wanted to do something meaningfull with his life only to have it end so violently in that war! I'm so sorry for your loss. And am grateful that this event has helped you and others feel some closer for all the tragedy this man has caused. Noangel, I loved what your friend said about out President. The contrast between him and Bush who 8 years ago today did his "Mission accomplished " shtick is something I'm truly grateful for. Midwifespal, don't feel alone, I have some of the same feelings as you. I'll celebrate when we are out of these awful wars. But it's a good day though and I hope this helps people affected feel some closure and gives our troops a moral boost. Someone mentioned that Clinton had a plan to get Osama. A couple years ago my cousin wrote a book about being in Delta Force and he was given the mission to put together a team to take Osama out during Clinton's time. He didn't even know who he was at the time but they put together a plan they thought would work and then it was pulled for reasons he didn't know. He ended up being the Special Forces commander in Tora Bora and writes about that day too. They aren't supposed to exist and he was only given permission to disclose who he was because he was written about in another book on Tora Bora so his cover was already blown. Bush's ineptitude is very apparent in his account as well, they had him that day. Weird, we knew he was special forces but nobody knew he was Delta Force and played such a pivotal role on that day. I still thought of him as the funny stoner from when we were kids. I've been lurking and haven't Had a chance to send my love to Catzmadam and bamafan. You'll both be in my thoughts and will be sending much strength and love your way.
