Some things are not jokes.

I am OK if GQ (or any other fashion publication) wants to criticize Adam’s style or a specific fashion choice. That is their right. But, when GQ wrote, “Hey @adamlambert, we get your shocking, gay, vampire shtick.” they went too far.

A shtick (Yiddish: שטיק) (or schtick) is a comic theme or gimmick. Used in a critique, shtick has a connotation of a contrived and often-used act—something done deliberately, but perhaps not sincerely. For this reason, journalists and commentators often apply the word disparagingly.

Adam is gay – it is not an act or a gimmick – he is gay, gay, gay.

Turn the page in the same magazine – to #2 worst dressed of the week – “2. Steven Tyler
We've never yawned gazing at the Level 5 WTF-ery of Steven Tyler. His outfits are the sartorial equivalent of a seizure-inducing anime explosion.” Shouldn’t that be….

“We’ve never yawned gazing at the Level 5 WTF-ery of hetero Steven Tyler……”

Now, I’m sure that there are some people out there thinking – oh, it really doesn’t matter. Those Adam fans are just being too picky. It was just a gay joke. Stop making such a big deal about it.

But this really does matter. Adam is famous, he can defend himself. But others cannot. And when a respected magazine publishes ignorant statements like this thinly disguised as humor, it sets the tone that it is OK to make fun of people who are gay and that this is some kind of an act that a person turns on or off based upon their career need or situation. It is time that we demand a more thoughtful and creative approach to humor. And, it is time that we stop confusing bigotry with humor.

I truly hope you will extend your apologies to Adam, and in the future, take into account that no one anywhere is dressing with such style, elan, panache, and sheer masculine beauty, as Adam Lambert.
