Um, what is wrong with an artist promoting their work? (Don't want to use the word "pimping.") It seems to me to be a "given." Unless one is doing art for the intrinsic rewards to one's own self only, of course it has to be seen/heard/experienced by others. How else is it supposed to happen?
If you are a local musician, you pound the streets, you visit all the local clubs and leave them with copies of your work, you network with everyone you know, you stand on street corners busking. If you are an actor, you get great head shots, you do work in obscure productions, you take roles as extras or chorus boys, you go to hundreds, maybe thousands of auditions, you hire a manager, some even use the couch to get a role. An artist's job can be said to be equal parts artistic creation and self-promotion.
And if, after eight years of self-promotion, auditions, demo tracks, connecting with other artists, knocking on doors, singing in small clubs filled with drunks, singing at birthday parties or bar mizvahs, working part-time selling cosmetics, singing on cruise ships, and understudying for leads that never take a day off, you still haven't been "discovered", you take a chance, go for broke, quit the best paying job you ever had, and try out for American Idol. Then, you fight against the tide every week to impress enough to stay on for another week, and another.
I cannot fault any artist for promoting their own work. If THEY don't believe in it, why should anyone else?
