Just found out that following AFL news takes time out of my TOH appreciation bliss (downloaded in full this morning before work).... shocking realisation, but an easy decision: Headphones back on, bottle of wine out of the fridge, balcony ready ... bye bye Adam News ... ... I've been here in this sound bubble for three hours so far, not ready to greet the world yet ...

The Woods interview was very interesting. I think the one thing Woods didn't get about Adam is that he is a theater kid from waaaaaay back. He was playing dress-up and pretending to be different personas while his age was still in single digits. To me, Queen + Adam Lambert was a stage show, not just a concert. It had sets, costumes, a script, scenes, acts, and staging. Adam had been a musical theater performer for sixteen years before pursuing a career as a pop singer. He drew on both the theater and the pop singer backgrounds to create the multiple personas in the Queen presentation. It was really a tour de force, not only vocally, but in terms of presenting a series of different characters or personas to fit the different songs and sections of the show. Therefore, Adam was not being forced into any role or vision. He was creating a world using all his performance tools, which is what Adam does! I don't think that was Mikael Wood's issue with the QAL concert. Reading his review again, he seemed to be disappointed that QAL did not attempt to do anything new with the songs, that is, the performances were too close to the ways that Queen originally performed them. A quote from his review: "Given the potential for creating something new with Lambert, an artist who’s demonstrated a distinct point of view in his own work, the show was also a disappointment, at least for those seeking more than rote nostalgia.
You caught a glimpse of Lambert’s personality -- the sexy-goofy charisma that made him such a sensation on “Idol” -- in his limited stage banter, as when he dedicated “Fat Bottomed Girls” to a portion of the audience he described with a delightfully unprintable epithet. He was good too in “Killer Queen,” which he sang while reclining on a purple velvet settee, his eyelashes fluttering with lovable mischief. As a singer, though, Lambert made no impression on familiar Queen songs like “Somebody to Love,” “Tie Your Mother Down” and “Another One Bites the Dust”; he wasn’t telling us anything about the music we didn’t already know."(Here is the link if you want to read his entire review: Mikael Wood QAL review 7-4-14 ) So, I think Adam's response to this criticism in the interview was a good one. He acknowledges that QAL didn't stray too far from the originals, but not because Brian and Roger were controlling/directing Adam too tightly, but because all three of them realized that radically reinventing the songs might have alienated the core Queen fan base. The hurdle of accepting Adam in Freddie's place was already high for some Queen fans; changing up the songs too much might have made the hurdle insurmountable. As Adam pointed out, most concertgoers loved the concert, so it seems QAL made the right decision.

(Christina House, For The Times) By MIKAEL WOOD June 12, 2015. .. What inspired that shift?Something I began to pick up on within my circle of friends over the last few years, which was this feeling of disillusionment. Disillusionment with what?People don't even know half the time. That's the thing — it's like this general haze, a feeling of not being satisfied. You're looking for something, but you can't put your finger on what it is that's going to satisfy you. That was the first big aha thing I wanted to write about. I turned 33 this year, and I feel like, "OK, I know who I am now; identity isn't so much of a challenge anymore." The challenge is figuring out what I want from my life. And from your career.Right. Before I started thinking about all that, my second album came out, and I was really proud of it, and critically it was well received. But it didn't quite have the life that I hoped it would have commercially. How did that affect you?I was bummed out. I wanted to release more songs to radio and make videos and ultimately put together a great big tour. What happened?A lot of things. I'm not going to point fingers, but I think there were some creative decisions and some business decisions that didn't quite line up. But, you know, there's no science to this; it's kind of a guessing game. MORE! Is this the guy that gave the bad review at the Forum? From the last line of the article, I kind of think it may be.

Yes, he reviewed the LA Forum concert -- but it was not a bad review, he was critical of some things, particularly the non-Adam part and the lack of newness about the performances. He thought KQ was good, Brian's long solo was boring -- www.latimes.com/entertainment/music/la-et-ms-queen-adam-lambert-the-forum-review-20140704-story.htmlHe has written nice things about Adam in the past. He is not like John Moser -- a guy who has not gotten over Idol yet!!

I'm a little scared about how easy this quiz was ... easy to tell how I've spent a good chunk of my non-work time during the last 6 years.

I finally was able to listen to the TOH stream and to the iHeart stream of the bonus tracks!! I'm in love! Nothing I'd skip on this album. It might take me a minute to warm up completely to Rumors though...I love Tove Lo, but I want to hear more Adam on it. It seems he kind of took a back seat in the vocal mix on that one. I love how is voice is so up front on most of the songs though. Cool vibes in the music, so different from what we usually hear on the radio (as has been discussed, lol). Of the bonus tracks, I think After Hours would have fit on the main album sonically and lyrically. Wish it were longer. Shame and These boys are cute, catchy tunes that I think would certainly fit on pop radio, but they have a much different vibe from the rest of the album. I know people are hoping to hear Adam sing them in concert, but he has never performed a bonus track live, has he? (I want Take Back!!!) Anyway, this will keep me going until Tuesday when my CD arrives from Amazon and DH will be at meetings all afternoon. I know what I'll be doing! Uhmm, He opened Glam Nation Tour with a bonus track (Voodoo) and performed Down the Rabbit Hole as part of the opening medley. Oh duh! I forgot those! But I seem to remember at some point maybe during Trespassing he was asked about performing bonus tracks, or maybe it was about releasing the, as singles, and he said something about there's a reason they're bonus tracks. Or I could be completely misremembering! Anyways, I hope he'll have a good long tour to plan and there will be plenty of time and space for him to perform these and more.
