It always makes me give a hearty eye roll to the reviewers who are looking for what they consider "meaningful lyrics" in Adam's music. It is POP! Adam's music has more meaningful lyrics than most music out there. Some can't acknowledge he's presenting a unique viewpoint--club/theater kid from the 90's--because they don't know about it or don't perceive it as unique. Reviewers who think that Adam's music can't be "real" because he doesn't flaunt his angst through some addictive activity. Why is music more valuable when it comes through a damaged personality?
I have been thinking that Adam has so many pre-conceived expectations overlaid over his monstrous talent:
1. People that want glam rock from Idol.
2. People who want to get the original high from Mad World days.
3. People who are cynical and can't believe that Adam is more complex than ___(insert word of choice here) just gay; just happy, hippy, trippy; theatrical; nice guy; vacuous pop star, etc.
4. People who want him to be a particular kind of gay/politicized voice.
5. People who want him to be just a fashion icon/spokesperson.
Probably I'm over-thinking it.
