#10 He speaks his mind
#9 He has a great sense of humor!
Black Swan – the sequel!
5.8.11 by Q3
About 2 years ago, in the run-up to the release of Adam’s debut album, an Adam fan posted about the concept of Adam being the “Black Swan”. In retrospect I realize that Adam was not the Black Swan.
In 2007, Nassim Nicholas Taleb published the book, “The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable “. The Black Swan Theory encapsulates the concept that The event is a surprise (to the observer) and has a major impact. After the fact, the event is rationalized by hindsight.
The theory is an attempt to explain:
1. The disproportionate role of high-impact, hard to predict, and rare events that are beyond the realm of normal expectations.
2. The inability to predict these consequential rare events using scientific methods (owing to the very nature of small probabilities).
3. The psychological biases that make people individually and collectively blind to uncertainty and unaware of the massive role of the rare event in historical affairs.
Once a rare event occurs, the novelty vanishes over time and the event seems easily predictable – almost expected.
Go back to 2008. A struggling singer in LA was told he was talented but too gay to be signed to a major label record contract. Fast forward a year to February, 2009, no one really knew if Adam Lambert, one of 36 semi-finalists on American Idol, did get signed to a Sony contract, if his music would every get played on US radio*. But he did get signed by Sony, and his music did get played on US radio.
Now it all seems so easy, so expected. It isn’t easy for any artist to be successful in the music business. And in the case of a 27 year old, openly gay singer raised in musical theater, the deck was stacked against him when he made into the Idol Top 13. Adam was too old, too gay, too theatrical, too retro, too left-of-center, too….why would any label want to invest a couple of million dollars on him?
* One example is Sam Sparro’s “Black and Gold”, #2 in UK, #5 in Europe, and did not even make the Billboard Hot 100 or the US Billboard Radio Airplay chart. Released in the US June 2008.
If Adam isn’t the Black Swan, what is?
The Black Swan isn’t the existence of Adam Lambert, it is one event -- Adam Lambert decided to change the dynamics in the only way he could – he became a contestant on American Idol. American Idol a show with one of the most conservative, middle-American audiences in the US – and he made it to the final. The event of Adam being on American Idol Final was the Black Swan event. It proved that a large number of Americans would accept someone who was clearly gay as a pop artist.
He was unlike any contestant who was ever on the show, and there cannot be another. He was the first clearly gay artist to make it to the American Idol final. And he was the first openly gay American artist to be signed to have a major label debut in the past 30 years – since the labels were consolidated. (There was a wave of openly gay American artists in the 1970’s – none achieve much commercial success – this is before the “big 6” major labels control the music industry starting in 1988 – there are now only 4 major labels and soon there will only be 3.)
I can hear the Idol bubble folks already – he wasn’t anything special, other contestants did great performances before Adam, the ratings for AI10 are better than AI8, etc. etc. etc. Yes, it is true that there were great performances on Idol before Adam and that the AI10 ratings are equal to AI8’s ratings, but I believe that these folks really miss the reason American Idol remains the #1 show in America. The quality of the singing and contestant performances is not why people watch American Idol. They watch it for the contest, and to see who will be “Queen for a Day”** and win the big prize. (No clever pun intended.) It is about hope – and dreams. And nothing can be more popular during a deep, prolonged recession than giving people hope and feeding their dreams.
The best performer and singer only wins when they are the most liked – and identity politics plays a role – it is hard to like or support what is not familiar.
** Queen for a Day was an American radio and television game show that helped to usher in American listeners' and viewers' fascination with big-prize giveaway shows when it originated on radio (1945–1957), before moving to television (1956–1964). The series is considered a forerunner of modern-day "reality television". The show became popular enough that NBC increased its running time from 30 to 45 minutes to sell more commercials, at a then-premium rate of $4,000 per minute. Source: Wikipedia.
If Adam being on Idol was a Black Swan Moment, what actually changed?
So what did it change? Certainly it changed Adam’s career, gave him a chance to release a major label album, amass a fanbase without the need of radio and eventually even have his music played on the radio. But it also paved the way for other gay artists to at least be considered by the major labels and perhaps get US radio airplay.
More importantly, it happened at a time when views in America about sexuality and rights were changing. Look at how much – GLEE not only has openly gay characters, but they cast an openly gay actor in the leading gay role. Compare that to Fame the American television series originally produced between 1982 and 1987 which was based on the 1980 motion picture of the same name. The show followed the lives of the students and faculty at the New York City High School for the Performing Arts – and had no gay characters. Yes, that was very realistic.
The insanity of DADT is coming to an end. The majority of Americans now support marriage equality. And one of the political bellwether segments of the US Electorate, Catholics, has shifted dramatically to the “right” side: A new poll released today finds a large majority of American Catholics — 71% — support civil marriage equality for same-sex couples. Link: thenewcivilrightsmovement.com/majority-of-catholics-support-same-sex-marriage-same-sex-sex-not-a-sin/legislation/2011/03/22/18187
Many people have played a role in creating this moment of change – but none may be more important than a singer who walked on to a reality TV show stage hoping to finally get a break.

A Little Something While We Wait…
5/08/11 by NoAngel
Given that we have about six months until Adam’s second album comes out, and (if Q3 prophesies correctly) four months until a single is released, I’ve grown increasingly concerned about what
First we have the concert at the Maxidrom Festival in Moscow. In the days preceding this performance, fans will be busy dusting off their National Geographic world maps to find Moscow, and calculating the exact time they will need to set their alarm clocks in order to awaken for the concert. They will also research Russian fashion and post countless pics of possible outfits for Adam to wear, with the most popular choice being the Rockstar Cossack look, with harem pants, knee-high leather boots, and the jacket from Leno Sleepwalker. Tommy, of course, will be wearing a fur hat with kitten ears.
During the concert, fans will attempt to decipher the Twitter list, much of which will be in Cyrillic. Thanks to Google Translate, rumors will spread like wildfire. What we initially think is an epic cover of Waltzing Matilda will turn out to be an epic acoustic Pick U Up, complete with Adam doing the traditional squats and leg kicks of Russian folk dance.
Post-concert, that weird pattering sound you will hear is thousands of fans impatiently tapping their fingers waiting for vids. A couple of folks from the Twitter list will promise to upload “in the morning after I get some sleep.” Fans will lose their collective cool immediately, decide that Adam was wrong and that entitlement is VERY sexy, and will badger the aforementioned Tweeters until they fear for their lives.
Once videos are posted, fans will analyze every note of every song, flailing at anything new, old, borrowed, or blue. Gifs will be made of everything that is sexy or cute (in other words, of the whole concert,) and fan vids will be set to the latest Russian pop hits (including If I Had You).
This process will take the fandom through the end of June, at which point it will be time to repeat all of the above for the St. Agathe en Feux Festival in Quebec, except of course we’ll substitute French-Canadian fashion options. Thus, the most popular guess for concert costume will be the Rockstar Mountie look, with, wait for it… harem pants, knee-high boots, and the jacket from Leno Sleepwalker. Tommy will be dressed as a pony with kitten ears.
Due to a more accessible location, many fans will make the pilgrimage to Canada, and U.S. productivity numbers will plummet due to an unusually high number of sick calls in the days leading up to July 29th. Fortunately, the economy will not suffer because both air travel and sales of French/English dictionaries will rise significantly.
Finally, we also have Concert X to look forward to! Concert X will be held at [insert name of an awesome venue less than 25 miles from your house] on [insert the most convenient possible date for your life situation]. There will be no need to stalk a Twitter list or adjust to a foreign time zone or learn a new language, because of course, you will be there. Not only that, but Adam will let you select his outfit! Naturally you will choose the harem pants, knee-high leather boots, and the jacket from Leno Sleepwalker. Your pet cat will be draped around Tommy’s neck.
Yes, there is plenty to keep us out of trouble until the time comes to freak out over a leaked photo from the Album #2 photoshoot that will make the Michelin Man uproar seem like a tea party with your favorite teddy bears. Never a dull moment!
