How Adam Lambert Taught Me to be a Chameleon
By Emily Pinette
Adam Lambert is a chameleon. His style and sound are constantly changing. The Adam we know and love today has come a long way since American Idol.
When Adam auditioned for American Idol, he had brown hair and sang Bohemian Rhapsody a capella. This look changed once he made it to the live rounds. Adam dyed his hair black and donned eyeliner. He performed rock songs and ballads. Then Adam went on tour for his debut album. He shaved half his head and was fabulously outfitted in campy costumes. For his next album, he toned down his style, and went more electronic pop.
Next came a collaboration from the heavens: Adam joined forces with Queen.
Now, Adam has a new album out, called The Original High. It makes use of synthesizers and is more new wave. Adam’s music style has gone from dramatic ballads, to glittery pop, to glam rock, and now synthpop. His personal style has evolved just as much.
Watching Adam perform today, you can tell he is much more confident than his American Idol days. He’s completely comfortable in his own skin. In spite of major life changes at a young age, it’s possible to strengthen your sense of self. Finding out who you are is a journey that can happen anytime – not just when you’re in the spotlight. It’s important to devote time to this process. The more comfortable you are with yourself, the better your relationships with others will be.
Adam has changed a lot over the six years he’s been in the spotlight. I’d bet money he’s not done transforming yet. Adam teaches us a good lesson: be comfortable with who you are, and it will show. Transformation is important, because it allows us to try out new things, and discover what we like and dislike. This type of experimentation can teach us a lot about ourselves.
Whatever he does to his style and sound, I know Adam will continue to impress us.
