It's like "Where's Adam" in this picture :-) it would be easier if he wore a red striped shirt and a hat. I can't spot him. Any of you with better eyes do? |

I really loved the surreal, artistic photos from the Schon magazine shoot -- until I read the credits below one of the photos and saw the word "taxidermy." If only they had used an artificial zebra head instead of a real one! (Or better yet, a live zebra.) Realizing that the head of a once-living, beautiful animal was being used as a photo prop made me sad and angry that too many of these creatures are hunted down for sport. Sorry if I'm coming across as a Debbie Downer. But I care deeply about animals, and feel strongly about mistreatment of them. And I think taxidermy is barbaric. Maybe too much of Brian's animal activism has rubbed off on me. (Not sure he'd love this set of photos.) I'm not criticizing Adam for this shoot; I'm sure he didn't see, or intend, anything negative in doing it. It's just that animals are a hot button issue for me. And there was nothing wrong with the shower picture, so at least I have that to appreciate! I agree with you 100%. The only time a severed head would make me smile would be if it belonged to Dick Cheney. (Oh, relax, FBI. That was a joke.) I don't even like the idea of using a fake head if it is realistic-looking, because it still glorifies the idea of killing an animal and displaying its head. It reminds me of that asshole dentist who killed Cecil the lion so he could hang his head on a wall. I was arguing this point over at Adam Without Pity and feeling like a big buzzkill, but I can't get past it. I won't be looking at these photos again. Fortunately, there is no shortage of gorgeous Adam pics out there that I can enjoy without having to look at a display of animal parts. I'm hoping that it's a fake - taxidermy isn't my thing either. |

I usually like creativesharka's edits....but having clouds in the background doesn't seem quite as fitting as a shower scene background, with all the soap suds and all.

Taxidermy still uses a formerly living animal- they may not have been killed for this specific purpose, but they did die and that's all I'm saying on this subject. Back to more uplifting Adam subjects! I feel the same about animals killed and stuffed. Or killing animals for sport in general. But I will go with shosh saying it wasn't real. I can't imagine Adam holding still for a real animal in the shoot and then facing Dr. Bri.. I still will not post it to my FB as I have friends at the San Diego Zoo and they still would pound me! I think that the company buys and sells taxidermy sourced from old museum collections etc. Perhaps also some that have died via accident or natural causes. Their items are real, but the animals are not killed specifically to be stuffed and sold . I don't think that Shosh said that it wasn't real, rather that no animal was killed to create the piece. ETA: at least not in the modern period. |
