It's fine if you feel that way. As it happens, I don't go around blaming homophobia for "every event or opportunity that Adam doesn't get." That doesn't mean I don't believe there are certain opportunities he doesn't get for that reason - IMO it's unrealistic to assume that's never a factor. I don't think it's a factor, at least not one that amounts to much. If that's unrealistic then I'm happy to live in my unrealistic world where as far as I've seen Adam has been given an open door straight into the inner circle of the industry. He's been welcomed with open arms in comparison to his straight Christian counter-part Kris Allen who, while certainly asked to sing the NA plenty of time (probably because he has nothing else to do honestly) hasn't gotten half the attention, accolades or success as Adam. But since Adam was openly gay prior to Idol and everyone suspected he was gay during Idol it would seem likely that him being gay isn't a factor. Why would he be the obvious choice at some high profile event? Do they, as a rule, ask male singers or is it usually the female singers who get asked? I honestly don't know as I don't watch the NA unless I have a reason to watch (like today when Kelly sang at Indy500). He's a fantastic singer, I realize that, but he doesn't exactly scream sporting event singer to me. Personally I can't see him in a jersey and jeans trudging out on the field and there are only so many national holidays to sing the NA at, Memorial Day and July 4th being the only major ones I can think of and both years since he came off Idol he's been kind of busy. I'm not sure I'd call it reactionary as much as a conditioned response built in from always seeing the adversity rather than the triumph. For me I'm just more inclined to believe that it's a case of Adam not being interested than not being asked; but like you said, unless Adam is asked that question we'll never know. |

Given his families very liberal political views it could be a case that Adam's just not as gung-ho on "America" as other, more southern, traditional/conservative previous idols are. |

I think it's an honor to be asked to sing the SSB/National Anthem. Most sporting events in particular have thousands of spectators so it's great exposure for anyone. Unless they have a previous engagement, I can't imagine any singer turning down the opportunity.

bocababe, I agree with everything you said. I especially like your description of the difference between Clay and Adam. Besides Ricky Martin, who just came out after many years in the business, I can't think of any other out Pop stars that exude the sexuality Adam does. Maybe Jake Shears, but he's not that well known.
Adam has broken down barriers for sure, but there is still a ways to go. There are radio stations, I am sure, that have not played him because he is gay. There are people who have not listened to his music or bought his albums because he is gay. How do I know? There are members of this board who have said they have friends or friends of friends who feel that way. He has risen above the prejudices he has faced and come out ahead. To think he hasn't lost opportunites because he is Gay is a naive outlook, IMO.
