bocababe, I agree with everything you said. I especially like your description of the difference between Clay and Adam. Besides Ricky Martin, who just came out after many years in the business, I can't think of any other out Pop stars that exude the sexuality Adam does. Maybe Jake Shears, but he's not that well known. Adam has broken down barriers for sure, but there is still a ways to go. There are radio stations, I am sure, that have not played him because he is gay. There are people who have not listened to his music or bought his albums because he is gay. How do I know? There are members of this board who have said they have friends or friends of friends who feel that way. He has risen above the prejudices he has faced and come out ahead. To think he hasn't lost opportunities because he is Gay is a naive outlook, IMO. Yes. You've said what I was trying to say...probably better than I said it. I seem to recall that Adam has sung the Anthem for a professional ballgame at least once pre-Idol, but unfortunately I can't remember the source for that, or even the team (I believe it was the San Diego Chargers). But pre-Idol, the folks in the stands wouldn't have known who he was, so his sexuality was a non-issue. And I'm not sure why his sexuality would have had anything to do with him singing the Anthem at Miramar; I believe it was his choice when he was asked to sing something a cappella. It certainly made sense for the venue. The thing about possible missed opportunities is that there is no way for us (or maybe even Adam) to know about them. We can't know the times people have sat around a table, discussed the possibility of offering Adam this or that, then declined, for whatever reason. We can only know about the opportunities that came to fruition, and luckily there have been many of them. However, when his name is conspicuously absent from a list on which he would be expected to be included, one may wonder about the reason for that absence. To me, his absence from the list of Idol alumni to have sung the National Anthem at a large public event of some sort is a good example. I find it difficult to believe Adam has something against singing the Anthem, and I also find it difficult to believe it was consistently impossible to fit into his schedule over the two years since his time on American Idol. That isn't to say one or both of those possibilities couldn't provide the explanation; I just happen to believe it's likely they do not. What I DO believe, in this instance, is that homophobia may be the reason. Or it may not be. We'll probably never know. ETA: Yes! Thanks, 4Msrmyn - I was right about the San Diego Chargers!

I just need to whine a bit -- why is Adam Lambert the only major Idol finalist to not be asked to sing the national anthem at a sports event or holiday? We know he can sing it. Maybe he doesn't want to sing it but I really doubt that. I know this isn't what you want now, but take it as a bit of Adam trivia. I don't know who to credit for this but it's all over twitter. OMG. Arms and tummy. For Adam, that's nearly nekkid.

Still wondering how I missed that Chargers SSB -- but I cannot find any video of it. Too bad. There is very little Adam video from the end of High School until 2004.
I think that the only hope is if someone has it in a closet somewhere.
ETA: This performance appears to have occurred when Adam was a senior in high school -- before he graduated.

It is very conceivable that considering gays are classed as second class citizens with unequal rights, that he does not derive great pleasure in singing the national anthem.. Home of the free... yeah if you are straight. Maybe when equal rights are afforded all citizens, gay, straight, transgender, no matter race, color or creed, maybe then he can sing it from his heart. We all know that Adam sings what he feels in his heart.

Hmm is it possible he hasn't wanted to do it because he wanted to position himself as more of a star separate from Idol and that singing the anthem when coming straight off the show was kind of an Idol-y thing to do? Like, maybe he will sing it (if asked) after he has had sufficient time away from the Idol association and is more established? I dunno.....oh well, there are a lot of variables we don't and may never know.... I'd rather see him sing on SNL or something. That makes sense, Chunkey. Well, if it's not a gay thing, and it's an Idol tradition, and Adam doesn't have a philosophical issue with it (which he must not, since he HAS sung it), then I'm going to conclude that the opportunities that have come up are not special enough for him. I mean, if any old Idol can get one of these gigs, it doesn't seem to mean a great deal. Seems Adam & his management want to set him apart a bit, and not have him be an easy "get." Naturally, I'm biased and know nothing, lol. The Idol Tradition aspect of it is why I am actually happy he hasn't done it. IMO it's actually become a bit of a cliche for Idols. I think it was Jimmy Kimmel IIRC who had a comedy bit that showed several Idols singing the anthem, basically mocking that that's the gig you get a few years out from Idol. Yes superstars also do it, but they don't have to contend with Idol baggage. I have no doubt he would kill it, his Mirimar version with that unique phrasing that really added to the feeling but without a bunch of extra runs might actually go over well with the purists. But by not doing it, he sets himself apart from the other Idols, who seem to be singing the NA somewhere every dang week. ETA: I really don't think it has anything to do with him being gay, I think it's more likely that he has had offers but his schedule has been booked with things that he values more than singing the NA, something he actually did on his own before Idol.

What makes you say he was a senior in high school? Not that I would know how to get a copy, but... How about TV archives? His parents?
