My son has been watching this show and doing a weekly review for an English course he is taking at the community college this summer, so I have been watching (or more precisely skimming) this with him. Skimming because it is exactly the kind of reality show that I find most annoying, i.e. one where there is smack talk, cliques, and OT personality is encouraged or at least edited to be important.
Anyway, this past week each of the last four contestants worked on their own to write a pop song which was then played by a DJ at a High School pep rally and voted on by the students attending. The winner of the vote was announced and goes on to the finale, along with two others voted on by the judges; Tara, Jewel, some A&R guy, and this weeks special judge Taio Cruz.
Why am I telling you all this? Because I can usually pick the winning dress design on Project Runway (love the show except for noted smack talk), the winning dance on SYTYCD (love the lack of smack talk and amazing skills), the best vocalist on any show (don't watch them anymore, Adam broke them) and yet to save my life, I have never been able to chose the song the judges chose. Never.
So back to this week because I find the results of the student vote illustrative. Here is the chosen song...
It's not that I don't like this song because I do like it, it's danceable and the students quickly picked up a fun hand gesture over their head pointing toward the Exit Door but it is simple and repetitive ... the chorus (or hook as you cognoscenti know they call it today) is the word Exit over and over. My favorite part was that I started singing Baby, Baby, Oh Baby and Gaga Oh La La and got a "good one" laugh from my son. Anyway, there are lyrics but the concept is typical for today, the (and this will date me) "You Can't Touch This" diva meme.
When I realized that all the judges as well as the students chose this song over the more lyrically complex tunes, I just shook my head. It was a bit of a downer because this is what Adam is up against and this is just not Adam. I really hope that his first single from Adam#2 catches on like "Rolling in the Deep" but it is not going to be easy when songs like Exit are interchangeable for Rhianna/Gaga/Kesha/BEP etc. etc. and every kid in High School can't wait to hear them.
Enough downerism already. I thought I would hide this over here and not spoil our fun today. Now I am leaving for the Exit Exit.
