I really enjoy watching this show. This season the dancing is out of this world. My only criticism or concern is that so much depends on the genre and the choreographer. If the theme is powerful and the choreography conveys the theme beautifully, the dancers have a huge advantage. If the style is something that many in the audience cannot relate to, or that seems stodgy and outdated, (like many of the ballroom styles), it doesn't matter how well the dancers execute it, many viewers won't vote for it.
Choreographers can also highlight dancers' strengths and downplay their weaknesses thru the choreography. For example, in the last number, Chris, the hip hop dancer, had very little "dancing" to do in that style. It was more to do with gymnastics, climbing on the bars, and striking poses. Very visually compelling, but much easier for him to adapt to than something lyrical with turns, lifts, and jumps.
Sasha and her partner were given the best piece tonight, from a tear at your heart perspective. They were given choreography and a story line that tore up the dance stage from beginning to end. Of course, they made the most of it..... not taking anything away from them. They danced it very well and acted it touchingly. But, if they had had to dance like woodpeckers, I don't think they would get the same audience response.
