I have no ninja skills whatsoever, but the photos look like this -
Roxy and Adam on the porch - probably back porch/patio, because the door doesn't look like a formal entry.
Adam and Hans in the house, in front of the incredible work-of-art done by Hans, purchased by Adam.
I'm thinking the photos were taken before the Pirates/Ninja party - Hans and Roxy live together, so maybe they came by for a photo shoot for the article before the event.
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it by a thread!
BTW - the story behind the key, and the artwork by Hans, is so real and so touching and so Adam. I get it.

Yep, it's definitely grass; you can see some is longer than other. I think painting is against plain beige wall with hardwood floors. And outside is a walkway with a side door.

I am thinking of the explanation around the key and its connection to the inner child versus the ego. I had to go double check my thoughts and i found this Freudian definition of 'ego' which is more appropriate than the colloquial definition we usually have in mind with the word:
The ego is the component of personality that is responsible for dealing with reality. According to Freud, the ego develops from the id and ensures that the impulses of the id can be expressed in a manner acceptable in the real world. The ego functions in both the conscious, preconscious, and unconscious mind.
The ego operates based on the reality principle, which strives to satisfy the id's desires in realistic and socially appropriate ways. The reality principle weighs the costs and benefits of an action before deciding to act upon or abandon impulses. In many cases, the id's impulses can be satisfied through a process of delayed gratification--the ego will eventually allow the behavior, but only in the appropriate time and place.
Perhaps he was equating that inner 'id-ian' child with the unfiltered artistic impulses that are too often tamed and mitigated by the ego's goal of fitting in. :-)

Is it possible that it's Hans' and Roxy's house and/or studio, and Adam just hadn't taken his painting to his own home yet?

Damn spiky grass bears no relation to our southern St. Augustine grass. ITA, the story behind the key is touching.
