[sits dejectedly on thread, with a small chalkboard on a string around neck] [pulls chalk out of pocket; writes] LOST VOICE. FEEL LIKE CRAP. PEOPLE KEEP ASKING ME QUESTIONS, AND I CAN'T TELL THEM OFF. [throws chalk on ground] - BB- If you want, have them call me and I'll tell them off for you. I'm really, really good at telling people how stupid they are without ever raising my voice, and I hate to have you feeling all frustrated and crappy because you can't point that out to them yourself.  Oooh!!! May have to take ya up on that one!!  Trying to explain lab procedures in Charade form is...um...amusing. [not!] Particularly when nothing is going according to plan. The kidlet - on the other hand - is being extremely sympathetic. 'Tho since I can't do anything but whisper, she's whispering too, and with my stuffed ears, I can't understand what the heck she's saying. She's also responding to my sign language with some interesting sign language combinations of her own. For instance, she came up to me this morning and said in earnest whispered seriousness and big teary eyes out of the blue and said.... "Mommy, I hate when you..."  "me". What could I say? Ok, well nothing. I can't even squeek. So I kissed her on the top of her head instead. Probably spread germs. But at least she knows she's loved. :D |

But at least she knows she's loved. :D I lost my voice a couple of years ago (allergy related- wasn't sick except for the voice), just in time for a family party. My 95 year old grandmother spent the whole time saying (and saying, and saying)- "It's awfully quiet here. I thought Cookie was going to be here." Feigned surprise. " OOHH! There you are!!" And the she would dissolve into gales of laughter. Over and over, all day. The lessons in this are 1) Never talk so much that people notice when you stop; 2) always come prepared for a way to distract your grandmother when she's smart enough to know that you have to be nice to her because she's old. Oh, and 3) take good enough care of your allergies so that you don't give your smart alec grandmother more ammunition.  |
