I found this interesting the other day. I was reading a numbers' thread at MJ's and someone posted the sales for Selena Gomez. I thought she was hugely successfull, but turns out, neither of her first 2 albums went platinum. They have a comined total sales of 1.4 million as of April of this year. And of course, she has released 3 albums in only 2 years. Yikes! Selena gets played a ton in Los Angeles!!! Oh that was in the thread of wailing over Cook's numbers. I really do not understand why fans do not understand that people do not choose between buying CD 1 and CD 2 but that actually that a big hit album can lift the whole market. When people buy Cook's album in a store or online, they could pick up the Adam GNL DVD/CD and add it to their cart. And if they buy Gaga's album, it increases sales of other albums -- people who buy music, often buy multiples. Same for books, shoes, cosmetics, etc. Yeah, this is odd thinking, and I wonder if these folks have bought any music in a while, other than when they got interested in an Idol. Buying music isn't like voting. Just because I buy one album doesn't stop me from buying another. Like you say, just the opposite. When I'm in the mood for new music, I'll often buy half a dozen singles from different albums all at once, or I'll get two different artist's albums at the same time. I think the Idol bubble sets up this weird competitive mindset that really doesn't translate to how most music buyers behave.

Do the listeners actually know what they like or do they like what they know?!

this is OT but since Adam loves Velvet Goldmine I'm gonna share a bit of interview from Ewan McGregor about his sex scene with Christian Bale. It is hilarious Hope it hasn't already been posted I think Ewan is talking about this scene @ 2:40

Looks like RCA did a really good job getting FYE and GNL in mass retail in preparation for the upcoming Adam promotion.
The online reports I'm reading about Cook's album are that Walmart had 6 CDs in opening stock level for the album. Target at 6-8. That seems low, but there are about 3850 Walmarts with music departments in the US -- at 6 CDs per store that is 23,100 CDs in stock.
HHD puts Cook's first week sales range at 38,000 to 43,000 based on actual sales through Thursday from the top US retailers + a forecast for missing retailers.
Cook fans have posted that DCO orders were 7K to 10K. Assuming that DCO orders are 8000. that leave 30000 to 35000 for the rest of retail. If 30% is digital and CD shipped direct, that is 21000 to 24500 at retail stores. In other words, Walmart alone has enough for the first week of retail.
I am sure that we will see higher stock levels for Adam #2. Because Adam fans buy CDs and seem to buy them in retail stores based on FYE sales.
