Bottom line, it seems artists must leverage and build their fans; it's the only thing that's going to keep them afloat. I was blown away to read how many of Gaga's "Monsters" are still ripping her off. That is unconscionable to me. Somehow, some way, the industry has to establish a tacit relationship between audience and artist so that people will not consider stealing from that person. Gaga kowtows to her fans (or her persona does) to a ridiculous degree from following her on twitter for awhile, and from some things she has said on stage and in interviews and it doesn't stop the piracy. I think artist/fan relationships are important, and that Adam approaches his like he does everything else, with honesty, independence, self-respect/boundaries, and "keeping it real". That's a part of why I stan him, and also why I unfollowed Katy Perry, Gaga, and some other artists whose twitters are heavily given over to fanservice. |

For 10 years people have gotten music for free. Some artists have given it away for decades -- Grateful Dead, Phish -- other have tried "pay what you want" campaigns, most famously Greed Day, and failed -- it is too late. Time for a new model -- whatever that is going to be, I do not think that Cloud subscriptions will be the answer.
