It's more profitable selling single (purple) than selling album, downloaded album in 2007decreased by 50% compared to 2007. Only the big stars like Gaga, Britney Eminem, Kelly Perry sell tons of singles (cause the radio plays the shit out the songs.) Is that chart a little misleading considering only a handfull of the biggest stars would make up the huge number of singles sold? I keep hearing that it's better that Adam is an Album seller ($10) vs single seller ($1.29) I have no idea.... No the chart is not misleading at all. In the US, the total number of albums sold is declining dramatically, while the number of individual track sold is increasing even more dramatically. The question raised is why are record labels and artists still organizing the business and their creative effort around albums when people are now buying tracks? Over the past 5 years, the percentage of albums and singles sold by the top 100 artists has declined NOT increased. On the point made above -- "Gaga, Britney Eminem, Kelly Perry sell tons of singles" -- well their "tons" is millions, and US track sales are headed to 1.4 TRILLION this year. They are a drop in the bucket. Here are the numbers for the first half of 2011: According to SoundScan's survey of the six months ended July 3, total album sales (physical and digital) climbed 1%, with 155.5 million units sold, vs. 153.9 million for the 2010 period.
Overall music sales -- including CDs and digital tracks -- were up 8.5% with 821 million units sold, vs. 756 million last year. Overall album sales, including so-called track-equivalent digital albums, climbed 3.6%.
Digital track sales, which were were nearly flat during 2010, rose 11% nearly flat during 2010, rose 11% through during the first six months of this year, totaling 660.8 million (vs. 597.4 million through the '10 midpoint). So Lady Gaga's big hit single for 2011 -- "Born this Way" -- sold 3 million units in the US, that is 3 million out of 660.8 million or 0.454%. Katy Perry's ET is only 4.2 million. Eminem had two hit singles in 2010 but most of his sales are albums. Track sales are spread over a lot of artists. The problem is that you need to sell 10 to 15 tracks to equal the revenue of 1 album. And track sales are not growing that fast.

Is it any wonder Adam's write in votes got him on the Do Something ballots?! (Marketers take note, please!) I love us!! I realize this is mostly in jest but.... As a marketing exec, I would say 41,000/100 votes per voter = 410 fans voting and yawn. It is not impressive. And marketing executives do not consider numbers like this when they are deciding on endorsement and other celebrity ad deals. There are many ways to determine the appeal of an artist to your target audience and to quantify the power of that celebrity to 1. personify the brand you manage, and 2. motivate or demotivate target consumers in the way you want. Major brands/minor brands/niche brands -- does not matter -- brand managers use marketing research BEFORE they do expensive endorsement deals. The only exception is a blanket endorsement deal -- like Ford has with Idol, Pepsi with X-Factor, etc.

I love this picture! Can I have it for my new avi? And where is justkaren? I'm not sure my proportions are right, I think the proportions look pretty good, but Sauli's greenish shirt and the odd angle of his neck make him look like a turtle, LOL! : It's either let him look a little turtle-ish, or include Danielle in the picture (or I guess, exclude Sauli) so I'm stuck with this for a bit I think.
