Adam Lambert was ashamed of being different when he was young

One of the few openly gay mainstream pop artists, Adam Lambert, tells about his youth in an interview in the show Behind the Music. In the interview, quoted by the Hollywood Reporter, Lambert tells he has gotten over the shame he experienced while being young and that he’s happy now.
Lambert, who launched into celebrity from the American Idol show, has inspired young people all around the world. Lambert talks in the TV show openly about his awakening into sexuality and about removing obstacles in his career.
- I think I was in about sixth grade when I realized I was different from the other boys. At first I was in denial and hid it. I just wasn’t ready to talk about it with anybody, Lambert states in the Behind the Music show from the music channel VH1.
According to Lambert, during his school years he was “playing the game”, following the fashion norms and asking girls out on a date. Now Lambert is happy with his life and himself.
- I was still ashamed of being different when I was young. They didn’t talk about it in the school at all. Because of this it is hard to be young and realize you’re gay or bi or whatever. Nobody told us that it is okay.
Already in his youth Lambert was determined. He loved musical theater and wanted passionately to be a Broadway star.
- I wouldn’t want to have a career and at the same time hide something. It just isn’t me. I’m proud of my sexuality, I’m not ashamed of anything anymore. However, I wouldn’t wear a shirt saying “gay” in big letters. In my shirt it says “Adam”, Lambert quips in his interview.
