Can you imagine though how it would feel to be a young person, struggling to deal with their sexuality, to have someone like Adam talk so openly about it. Seeing that he went through the same thing and how he overcame the insecurities and became a great success without hiding his sexuality? Adam is trying to give young people like him what he never had, a gay role model. Also, I am sure this is just a small part of the special but I think it is important and it looks like they deal with it very well in the episode. I does look like we'll get quite a few new pics and things though. Same subject but with home movies. Yay! Adam's struggle to find you he is as a person as well as a musician will always be part of him and it feels like he's internalized this as his political statement. Again saying, he didn't know anyone who was gay and they didn't talk about it at school. Say his name these days in elementary schools and the gay label is defintely attached to him like a brand too. But you know how he handles that, by telling the kids I'm willing to be open so that you know somebody just like you.
And I think Adam compartmentalizes these things. A discussion about his new album should be about the music, of course when he puts out new music like OOL well then there is going to be some verring in that direction. In a biographical piece then for him it was a large part of his self discovery. VERY WELL SAID IMO!

This is kinda OT but something I have been wondering about the new album. Single wise at least, do we think Adam will have to stick with songs that don't have the "he" pronoun or lyrics that imply that he loves, was shaking his booty with on the dance floor, was kissing, or anything else with another dude? Basically I am asking if we think he will have to neuter himself and/or be extremely conscious of every lyric in order to get airplay? I always wonder if Fever would have been a single if not for the "he" pronoun issue. It's sad it's even an issue but still....
I obvs would not want him to censor himself, it's not fair and it kills creativity, but I also don't want radio to not play him because of something so stupid, esp if it's a song that could be massive. ETA: Look at what happened with FYE. Yes it was right after the AMA debacle, but I still don't think radio would have been receptive to a song with s&m themes coming from a gay man, even if the song was a decent first single which iI think it was. (Now a song CALLED S&M from a chick is a different story! lol)
Thoughts?

I understand the significance of being a role model. It was the article itself. The majority of it focused on his gayness and not his music and other struggles. Guess I thought news articles would go beyond. guess I'm asking too much. It just touches a nerve with me. I saved this article especially for the openly gay description, comment and Ed response Syndney Star Observer: Lambert Premieres New 'Personal' Trackwww.starobserver.com.au/celebrity-2/2011/08/01/lambert-premieres-new-personal-track/58142

While I, too, wish the program and the media would focus on the music and the voice, the show is "Behind the Music." In other words, who is this person besides being a singer/performer? What challenges have they faced in their personal lives? And, for Adam, the main challenge was being gay. True, there are MANY gay artists, but, Adam is one of the few who is so open and honest about it, especially before being well-established as a star. So, I understand why this is an emphasis of the show, or at least of the previews they show to capture the interest of the public. Remember, many people out there don't personally know ANY gay people (ostensibly, altho, if the truth were to come out, most DO know gay people). I remember many years ago when my mom came to visit me I was suggesting we go to a certain restaurant with great food and atmosphere. My only hesitation was that all the waiters were gay. I wasn't sure how my mom might handle that, so I told here beforehand. She said she was fine with it as long as they didn't attack her, or some such foolish thing. I assured her that it would NOT be a problem (while trying not to laugh uproariously in her face). To my mortification, mom waited until we were sitting at a table, one of the few occupied at that time of day. Then, she asked in a clearly audible voice, "How do you know that they're gay?" : : : Gotta love her. This program may be intriguing to folks like "mom." Someone up-thread said that if Adam were not gay, he probably wouldn't have needed to go on Idol. That got me to thinking: what would Adam's life have been like if he were straight? Would he still be as fabulous and famous? I think it would have taken a different path. He probably would have made it in theater, on Broadway. But, if he had, he may have been content to be a Broadway star, and may not have ventured into pop/rock. Since most people are unaware of actors/singers who only do onstage work, would we have even had the opportunity to hear him and learn about him? He might also not have developed his fabulously different style and look. Not hung out with the We Ho counter-culture types and gone to Burning Man. Done the Zodiac Show. Etc. Etc. His life might have been quite different from what it is. So, although "gay" is just one aspect of his personality and life, its impact cannot be minimized. Finally, as Adam becomes more and more comfortable in the role of a "poster boy" for gay youth, I think he probably is fine with programs dealing with his sexuality in tasteful, respectful ways, because it gives kids the role-model he sorely lacked. All just IMHO.

They just focus on his gayness - will it ever go away and focus on his music? Man, all those pics we have NEVER seen before and adorable, precocious BB Adam and that's all you get from that? It's the lead. It's the hook. Yes, it sucks, but look at many of the others (these are BIOGRAPHIES, after all). If you watch others, you'll see growing up inner-city poor, abuse, later bouts with drugs and alcohol. These things are the background so the story can show the heartbreak, pain, struggle. Adam had a rather idyllic life growing up. They need a story arc. They have to show the conflict he endured to get to where he is. Otherwise, there would be no story and he likely wouldn't be covered, unfortunately. And Adam repeatedly brings it home for other kids – that is one of his most powerful roles he is playing right now. He is a living "It's Get Better" video.

TommyJoeRatliff TommyJoe Ratliff So...Westboro Baptist Church called me "Devil Child" ... I'm honored. :-) 5 minutes ago Behind the Music didn't interview anyone in that loonie church, did they?? Or does Tommy refer to an article or something that I don't know of? (Maybe, even when Adam's friends & family hasn't seen the show before it's airing, Adam told them tidbits about it?) I laughed when I saw Tommy's tweet. That comment from WBC had to have made his day!! He lives for that kind of stuff..... Ha
