Adam Lambert - Behind the Music preview #2
Adam Lambert on VH1's 'Behind the Music': His struggle with his sexuality -- EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW VIDEO
8.4.11 EW Music Mix by Tanner Stransky
When eventual runner-up Adam Lambert hit American Idol back in 2009, the buzz about the singer wasn’t only focused on his stellar vocals–much of the din about Lambert instead was about his sexuality, which he didn’t address directly until after the season was completed.
It’s still a hot topic, as Lambert discusses when he first realized he was gay in the latest episode of VH1′s Behind the Music: Adam Lambert, which will air on the cable network Sunday, August 7, at 10 p.m. EW has the exclusive preview clip of the hour-long episode.
“When Adam was younger, he had an imagination that was wild,” his mother, Leila Lambert ,says. “He loved to put on costumes and make-up, and he loved to play all kinds of characters.” Lambert himself chimes in: “My parents put me in a theater program and that was to kind of channel some of my excess energy. They put me in indoor soccer and t-ball and, surprisingly, neither one of those really worked out for me,” he says with a laugh.
As he got older, though, the identity crisis began. “I think when I was about sixth grade, that’s when I realized that I was probably not the same as the other boys,” Lambert remembers in the clip. “And, you know, it was a weird discovery and, of course, I was kind of in denial for a while and it was all in my head. To me, it was a deep secret. I was just not ready to talk about it with anybody. I didn’t know how my parents would react, and I didn’t know what that would be like, and I think, at at that age, it was something that I was ashamed of because it was so different and wasn’t the norm and not encouraged and no one talks about that in school. That’s one of the things that’s so hard about being a young person and realizing you’re gay or bi or whatever–we’re not told that that’s okay.”
Of course, Lamert’s sexuality isn’t the only thing chronicled in the Behind the Music episode — the hour gets into his rise through theater, his time on American Idol, and his controversial American Music Awards performance in the fall of 2009. Friends, family, and music industry folks–including Barry Weiss and American Idol season 8 winner Kris Allen–also chime in on the special.
EW has the exclusive first look at the episode here:

Adam Lambert Is Proud of Being Gay
By Jeremy Kinser
Posted on Advocate.com August 04, 2011 05:45:00 PM ET
Pop superstar Adam Lambert was ashamed when he first realized he is gay, but is now proud and wouldn't hide his sexuality for anything, according to a new Behind the Music profile.
Lambert recalls that he was in sixth grade when he realized he was different from most of the other boys. “I was kind of in denial for a while and it was all in my own head," he says. "And to me it was a deep secret. I was just not ready to talk about it with anybody.”
“I think at that age it was something that I was ashamed of, because it was so different,” Lambert remembers. “No one talks about that in school and that’s one of the things that’s so hard about being a young person and realizing that you’re gay, or bi, or whatever. We’re not told that that’s OK.”

WATCH: Glambert’s Back With New Single and Behind The Music Special
8.4.11 Queerty.com
Behold, Adamites, we bring you the new Adam Lambert song “Outlaws of Love.” Yes, it’s a stripped-down live version from a recent show in Quebec, but the track is scheduled to be on his as-yet-unnamed sophomore album. “Outlaws” arrives just in time to pique your interest in Glambert’s upcoming Behind the Music episode, airing on VH1 this Sunday, August 7, at 10pm.
Admittedly, it’s weird seeing Behind The Music episodes for artists whose careers are still in their first or second wave. It makes you wonder what they’ll fill the airtime with since there’s been no “…and then, he hit bottom” moment. In Lambert’s case, it appears that the usual rock-n-roll-excess montages have swapped places with some sweet moments with his mom, Leila, who says:
I thought this is a golden opportunity for me to say something to him. And I said, ‘You know, you can tell me anything. Do you want to have a girlfriend?’ And he said, no, not really. And I said, ‘Do you want to have a boyfriend?’ And he goes, ‘Well, I don’t know, maybe.’ And so at that moment, that was the first time he ever really said that.
As well as some justifiably rankled commentary from Lambert himself on that whole dumb guy-on-guy kiss controversy:
It felt like I was coming under attack, for reasons that were probably a little deeper then actually what I did. In fact the next day on television the talk show that did end up having me on as a guest last minute showed the kiss between Christina, Madonna, and Britney and then immediately followed it with a clip of my kiss with my bass player and they blurred it out. In that moment I thought well what message is this sending to kids? Is this sending that being two girls and kissing is okay, but two guys kissing is not okay? It was really frustrating.

SNEAK PEEK: Taken From “Behind The Music: Adam Lambert”
8.4.11 VH1 Best Week Ever TV By Michelle Collins
This Sunday, August 7, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, Adam Lambert’s world is going to be upside-down. Or, at the very least, turned to a 45 degree angle and zoomed in upon. That’s because Lambert has now officially reached the upper echelon’s of pop culture stardom, as he is starring in his very own VH1′s Behind The Music. The VH1 Blog has done us a great service, giving us a glimpse at one of the most interesting aspect’s of any Behind The Music… Adam’s childhood.
And let us all give a round of applause to Adam’s parents, who not only had the sense of photographing and videotaping Adam whenever a costumed wig, hat, or Phantom mask was placed on his adorably freckled face, but more importantly knew to save it, so that, many years from then, when VH1 realized they wanted to go behind his music, they would be readily available.
But Behind The Music turns serious as Adam addresses his sexuality as a child, and what it felt like to grow up gay. It’s a revealing clip, as Adam talks about his struggles to fit in — we even see a clip of him taking a skinny blond girl to prom. Those of you concerned with the “Da Vinci Code” like cliff-hanger at the end of the clip, be sure to tune in on Sunday for what happens next, which I’m guessing is not “take the virginity of the skinny blond girl.”

Inspired by RCA Ed.....
8.5.11 by Q3
OK, I will be the first to admit that this headline is not as inspiring as "Inspired by Adam". But this article was inspired by the sales thread on AdamOfficial.com and RCA Ed's responses.
There are a few Adam fans who believe they are retail channel experts. Here are a few of these “sage” suggestions about how fans think they can help Adam and the most likely effect. [All of these ideas are based on real posts!!!]
1. You walk into Walmart, look for Adam’s albums and find them neatly filed under Miranda Lambert in the Country section. You move them to the correct spot.
Q3 sez: This is a great thing to do quietly and without any comment to the overworked, underpaid store staff.
2. Walmart has Adam’s CD’s correctly placed in Pop Rock. An enterprising Glambert decides that Adam’s CD should be in the endcap with the best sellers and decides to correct the situation. Mumbling something about how RCA is way too cheap, she stealthily moves the discs and walks away thinking about how she will post this on AdamOfficial.com and get kudos form RCA Ed.
Q3 sez: Do not do this. Within 24 hours the CD’s will be pulled off the endcap and most likely will sit for a day or two before they are restocked in the correct place. Rather than make more people aware of Adam’s CD’s, the fan has just cost Adam a day’s sales. Plus, the loss of those sales, reduces the number of CD’s shipped next week, costing him more sales. Really bad idea.
3. You walk into a major chain and find [OMG] they are out of stock of Adam CD’s. You pursue the Store Manager and ask him to reorder all the Adam titles right away. The Manager smiles politely. You leave the store. The Store Manager does nothing.
Q3 sez: Voting in a poll of which Adam hairstyle you prefer has more value. Store Managers have almost no control over local music stock. Do not bother them or waste your time on this stuff.
4. You walk into a major chain and find [OMG] they are out of stock of Adam CD’s. You read online that the Store Manager cannot correct this so you decide to call RCA and report this issue.
Q3 sez: Do not do this. The store allocations for major US Chains are not controlled by RCA. And if 20 fans call RCA independently or because of an online campaign, they just annoy the folks are RCA. The receptionist complains about the 100 fans who called today to provide helpful advice about increasing the stocking levels for Adam #2. She tells the story to her boyfriend Steve who also works for RCA, pleads she has a headache, and goes to sleep. Steve is disappointed because he has “plan” for their evening and that Adam Lambert guy messed them up. That next Adam Lambert shipment might move through the RCA distribution center a bit slowly.
5. You are really smart, you know that CD stocking levels in all the major US chains are not controlled by the Store Manager or RCA. You decide to call Walmart Corporate Headquarters in Bentonville, AR. After charming your way past a few people, you finally end up in Merchandising and you leave a voice mail with a detailed list of the 17 Walmart stores that fans has found were out of Adam’s albums.
Q3 sez: Walmart does not run their music departments, but contract this department of their store out to a third party. The Office Supply Buyer returns to her office and listens to the message. Laughs a sly laugh, deletes it, than glances at the picture of Kris Allen she has taped to her cubicle wall.
All joking aside. Leave the retail channel management to RCA. Fans cannot help Adam by getting involved in retail store stocking except by removing Adam from Miranda Lambert exile and placing his CD's back into Pop-Rock music.
Here is the exchange from AdamOfficial.com that inspired my post:
carly.nyc:
Re: Consolidated Sales information, Certifications and performance thread for Grammy Nominee Adam!
politics, but of course, i understand -- thanks ed.
maybe then you'd agree to occasionally grace us with a little more of your wisdom/knowledge on some of the topics we discuss here.
…….
i also think we can give you really good in the field feedback about stock in major market stores (esp if we were pointed in the right direction) -- but i realize that too might get political. LOL does your sales dep't want to hear from you that they are not getting the job done, as told to you by your BSC BB lovers on AO? i think not. But still -- esp when the new cd drops, i think we should post what we see, ask (as you explained) if there is more stock when we don't see any, request a manager to ask about re-stocking etc. and of course, we move him to the front (but you never said that . . . and never eclipse another sony/rca artist in the process, uh uh, i'd never do that )
RCAED:
Carly.nyc: Do you want to hear about getting yourself a music business job and learning some of those politics and reasons for the way things are? Smiling Do you want to hear about how retailers are shrinking their music sections to make room for other products, since digital is clearly the ultimate solution for music retail of the future? It's never easy stocking every last outlet in the universe and gauging consumer needs there, never mind convincing each and every outlet to BUY the stock when their priorities are, as I mentioned above, shifting to selling other products. Also, how to rationalize to these retailers that they may see all of their historically effective stocking formulas usurped by well-meaning but still atypical fans who obsessively buy endless copies of the same product? And, ultimately, WHY rationalize it since most everyone orders their music - digital or physical - online instead of at a brick and mortar retailer, and will increasingly do so. The arguments are endless, and I could go on for days "educating" you guys on super complex historical, economic, and technological issues you'll simply never understand or accept in parts - not least because you do not represent the behavior of 99% of the buying public. The public that actually makes major careers instead of minor cults that THINK they matter most, but really do not. In short, please don't take this as my picking on you (but then, I could say you were picking on me earlier, so whatever), but you'd have to pay me a lot of money to give you this education, instead of carrying out the work I'm paid to do here at RCA: the work that makes superstars, rather than cult icons. Honestly, it's emblematic of the tiny little universe we've created here on AO that some folks allow themselves to forget the larger issues, politics and complications of everyday life, but that doesn't make it correct. As always, I'll continue to try to illuminate and educate whenever I can, because I take great pleasure in doing so, above and beyond what I need to do as a music FAN speaking to other music fans (not celebrity stalkers); but it's going to have to relate to specifics, rather than world changing philosophies bigger than all of us and the issues at hand. Let's be real now, people! It's only rock and roll! Smiling OK, back to work - talk later.

Later in the conversation, RCA posted another response....
Re: Consolidated Sales information, Certifications and performance thread for Grammy Nominee Adam!
Good God, that's too long a response for me to deal with, Carly, but I think I got the gist of it and let me summarize my earlier points in a different way as best I can:
1. I and my colleagues at RCA know what we're doing when it comes to building successful artist careers and and you do not.
2. I and my colleagues at RCA know how the business of music and consumer behavior is evolving better than you do.
3. I and my colleagues at RCA know what the COMPLETE artist fan base wants based on real data and you only think you do, based on tidbits of nonsense you pick up while surfing hysterical twitter accounts, blogs and whatnot.
4. I and my colleagues at RCA actually work with Adam and know/do what he wants while you do not.
5. The information we provide, events we endorse, and actions we take all reflect Adam's wishes and vision, and if you don't like that, you don't like what Adam wants.
So while I am happy to answer legitimate questions and reveal business practices and trends that don't involve confidential information about Adam's career, or elements that, while rumored to high heaven, are simply not confirmed fact yet, you'll have to forgive me for not tolerating petty sarcasm from someone who seriously has no clue. This isn't FOX News, where "some people are saying" flies as fact; I and my RCA colleagues actually know what everyone is saying vs. what the self-appointed know-it-alls think is being said.
You don't have to read my posts here or believe anything I say, but if you do read them and care to contribute to the conversation instead of starting arguments like this one, then please keep the facts listed above in mind. That's all. If you ask a dumb question with a know-it-all tone and I have a moment to spare for an answer, you'll get a fittingly condescending response. I'm sure those business-focused questions will start flowing again (or rather, I'll have answers to provide again) once the new album comes into sight, so I just wanted to clarify our stance about answering them while we were on this subject.
Thanks for reading.
