I cut off this little piece for the timeline- Ooooo. Thanks. But you cut off the final big note. Still..... that little clip blew me away. Such a rich, caramel tone. Beautiful. I, too, NEED TO SEE THE WHOLE SONG. This did not look like a homemade video, because of the different camera views. I read something about him competing is some talent competition in California in HS. Anyone remember more? He came in second (again). I wonder if this could be from that? This has had me confused. One of Adam's bios for a play says NY. The article says CA. Early April 2000 April 4, 2000 Adam travels to New York with the MCHS Classical Vocal Ensemble. Lincoln Center April 17, 2000 Adam performs a solo as a Spotlight Awards Finalist at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion LA CA
This article, posted Thurs April 20, 2000, says the awards were held on Monday. That would be April 17, 2000. articles.hbindependent.com/2000-04-20/news/export12243_1_spotlight-awards-classical-voice-category-edison-high-schoolEDITS: Changed video to new version that includes final note. Changed awards location back to LA. Added LA date.

As a dedicated member of #teamhairdown I totally agree. I can only hope that some day he wears his hair down in some manner again. I like it better down, too. Lol Adam, if you're watching, it makes you look younger. I do too!! (or three!) And I totally agree that it makes him look much younger... He seems to like it better up and back away from his face these days though so I'm not sure how often we'll see it down - except in a rainstorm - for a while. (Maybe we can convince him that it's important to look younger to attract those younger fans?? )

Nothing seems beyond you.

Nica, loved the story with your daughter, but this part echoed back to me from my years in film school as a young, idealistic student:
When we were in school, there were people in my program who judged our professors, who were often industry professionals. "They must not be that great, if they have to teach part time ..." Well, needless to say, many of us got out of school thinking we were going to set the world on fire and instead, we got our asses burned by the reality of how freaking difficult it is to make it in the entertainment business. It is a LOT of BS and it can be very arbitrary. Someone might suck, but be in the right place at the right time and they get the job five minutes after you walked out the door.
Sure, it's real romantic to think it's going to all come together because your talented, hard working and determined. The fact of the matter, sometimes it just doesn't work out no matter how good you are an how many chances you've taken. The end result of what Adam has achieved proves that the benefits outweighed the "stigma." And the "stigma" is really something dreamed up by the too-cool, indie, rocker types. Which ironically, was Adam before he went on the show.
Any one of a number of things could have happened during the audition process that would've prevented him from getting to the TV audition. One clueless producer (or someone distracted or in a bad mood or they just didn't think his "type" would fit the cast) in the early stages could have sent him home and to this day, none of us would have ever heard of him, despite his talent. People do what they have to do in this world and it always breaks my heart a little when certain segments stigmatize because of some random notion they've built up in their own head.

No matter how extraordinary the talent, no matter how hard an artist works to perfect his/her craft, no matter how dedicated/obsessed they are, "making" it in the music business is still a crap shoot. Who ultimately makes it often has less to do with talent and hard work than with some mystical convergence of the right time, the right contact, the right gimmick, the right place, and many other unidentifiable factors. Think about it. Adam sang like an angel at 18 years old in that clip. Got exposure during that competition. He also was seen by tens of thousands in Brigadoon, Hair, Wicked and other professional productions. For years, people saw him in telethons, in clubs, in benefit concerts, and many said, "Wow!!! Who is that kid? He is incredible!!!" Yet, no one stepped up to promote him. Adam, to me, has the most beautiful, touching voice I have heard.... and I have heard many excellent voices. Yet, he had to go on Idol, and, as you said, could have easily not made the cut for any number of factors. I have known many incredible singers/performers, all of whom would blow every Idol contestant or The Voice contestant this year out of the water. Yet, none of them "made it." I love Adam's message of personal empowerment and positivity, but, I know that it is an oversimplified view of the performance world. True, he wouldn't have made it without all those years of hard work and dedication and passion, but, all that, plus his unique voice and personality never assured him of the career he now has. I will be forever grateful to the people behind the scenes at Idol who finally recognized Adam for what he is and what he could be.
