Me, too, Mayumi. Because it will probably be quoted around the world within the next 24 hours. But, consider the context. He is talking to a group championing the rights of GLBT individuals. I think it is an example of Adam code-switching.... matching his communication to the people he is addressing. It's one of those things a member of the group can say to other members, but outsiders never can. Unfortunately, it WILL be taken out of context by the straight media community, and probably get lots of condemnation and misunderstanding. As experienced as Adam is with the press and the internet these days, he still occasionally seems to slip and not consider the broader community that will read what he says without the understanding of context. Can't fault him.... it is natural for him to do the code-switching. But, yup, I cringed. And I don't thinik Adam will care! This was a proud moment and he was speaking to his audience, that was there. You're right. He knew that going in. He was giving that "condemnation" the ugly name projected onto him and owning it, reversing it and saying, "It has no power over me anymore." Choke on it bitches. The label is just a label – it doesn't marginalize me. Or US (his audience)

I love Adam but the language he used here made me cringe a little . . . .don't mind me, it's the prude in me. Me, too, Mayumi. Cassie- I'm less worried that he'll be criticized and more worried that fans will think they can use the phrase now as a term of endearment- I'm seeing that all over twitter as we speak. I can't think of any situation that I, as a straight woman, could use that phrase(not that I want to, but you get my point).

Video soon!6 minutes ago At the same time as Adam was making his speech, a tweeter @busky sent him a one word tweet: fag When will it end? I don't see the tweet but the real answer is, it won't. That's why it's so important that he used the word and reclaimed it with such pride (as other gay men have been doing for years). I'm so proud of him. Personally I didn't cringe, I cheered.

It will never end, but nights like this show that people like @busky don't even deserve to lick Adam's boots. Just as there will always be other hate mongers, there will always be homophobes. Sometimes human nature sucks.

I agree! He's earned it, he's lived it. He can express himself anyway he wants and I will love it!

I have been in settings with a group of gay guys and heard them call each other "slurs" that are obviously not in that setting. And, Adam may very well have decided that, on such and important occasion for him personally, he was gonna keep it as real as it gets. I mean, didn't someone say he and Sauli also kissed? PDA that I don't think they have done before. It may be his way of owning his orientation, his culture, and his right to be open about it. What the evening was about, really.

I believe in free speech, but I'd love to see ATOP be an angst-free zone on this incredible night when Adam's character is being honored.
