Did we see this interview response from Nigel Lythgoe? I think Idol def has some 'splainin to do for it's occasional past treatment of gay contestants, and perhaps even more so for the pretty suspect "banter" between, say, Ryan and Simon, but I gotta say I think old uncle toothy has a point here: You probably saw NBC’s The Voice judge Adam Levine saying Idol should show openly gay contestants. What do you think of that and could that change next season? To be frank, I didn’t understand why we’re talking about contestants being gay or not gay. I don’t go into my dentist and say, “Are you gay?” I don’t say to contestants on So You Think You Can Dance, “Are you gay?” What does it got to do with me? What does it got to do with anybody? When does privacy stop in this country? If somebody wants to say they’re gay, it’s up to them. You don’t expect us to turn around and say, “Are you gay?” Why would we do that? — “By the way, he’s a Catholic and he supports Obama and here’s his sexuality” — what does that have anything to do with singing talent? Maybe it does for Adam Levine, but not for me.
So the reason nobody has been openly gay on Idol is that it’s up to the contestant. Did [season eight Idol contestant] Adam Lambert come out?
Afterwards, I believe so. He must have come out before being on Idol, he just didn’t talk about it on Idol. And why should he? Is every actor going on television going to say, “I’m only playing the part of a straight man, I’m really gay”? There’s no reason that I would see why anybody that goes on television should start coming out with who they are, what they are, what they’re sexuality is, who they’re going to vote for or what their religion is. And I like how he points out that Adam was out before Idol (and essentially passively out on the show--he certainly wasn't in). Too often that little detail gets ignored. insidetv.ew.com/2011/08/17/idol-emmys-producer/Love this and yeah, I'm totally with Uncle Nigel on this one. I think the Levine/The Voice callout is a publicity stunt from NBC and it's rather self-serving. Like, "Hey, look how awesome we are that we don't make our contestants closet themselves!" But then, you are kind of tokening them. I don't begrudge the contestants that – in their intimate interview packages – revealed something that was part of what they were struggling with in their life, in their career. That was up to them to reveal. It really shouldn't have been relevant past that point. Adam was NOT struggling with his sexuality when he reflected on his past challenges in his interview package. He had long since came to terms with that. His backstory was more about making it as a musician/singer/actor in Hollywood and trying to figure out what he truly wanted to do and where he fit.

ITA and particularly with your last point. Also, it always drives me nutso when people say he wasn't out on Idol. What do you call it when you own pics of same-sex make-outs, change the lyrics in the itunes versions of songs from "girl" (TOMT) and "woman" (WLL) to more gender-neutral versions, happily camp it up when you feel like it, and sing freakin' CHER to make it to the final rounds? Pretty damn out if you ask me. And I'm not talking about sporting some "guyliner." : As Adam famously said, "I don't think it should be a surprise for anyone..." Not much of a freakin' scoop.

www.zimbio.com/Androgynous+Rock+Stars/articlesAndrogynous Rock Stars All the best rock stars have blurred the lines when it comes to normative gender roles. After all, rock 'n' roll is all about pushing boundaries. How much I love the fact that they place him among these people, I cannot tell you. :D I can not even tell you how much I love this! Ahhh - Quite a group he's rubbing shoulders with here! A little something for the "fifteen minutes of fame" folks to see.... Had to take a capture of All the best rock stars

Right (although he did use "woman" in the WWL performance ) But as we all know, Adam is no slouch when it comes to cultivating an air of mystery in order to pique interest. [And maybe he's gotten a little TOO good at that as of late ] But like the androgyny appeal, it's all part of his mystique, and he knows how to use it. In RL, he's an open book; on stage, he's so many things and he likes to tease the audience with all of them. The mark of a very skilled performer. His strategy on Idol was to always keep the audience and the judges guessing. It worked.

However, the treatment of some apparently gay men and the horrible gay banter between Ryan and whomever was always wrong and embarrassing to watch.

When I was watching AI8 I was unaware of all the internet resources and explorations that take place around the show. It was just something I tuned in on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. I was highly impressed by Adam's voice and showmanship, but it never occurred to me to google him. So, I didn't know about the photos and rumors going around. But, when he took that strut down the stairs in Feeling Good, my gaydar said, "Yup. Gay. Only guys I have seen walk down a stairway like that were queens." (I don't mean to offend anyone. It was not a negative observation in my world.) So, I agree. Adam was never trying to hide anything. He was using everything in his arsenal to put on the best performance he could.

evergreen TY, I love it too... Animated thank you for posting Hallelujah vid. This afternoon has been full of memories, while listening to Kurt Nilsen's songs once again (after a little break). www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUU28xPAQmU&ob=av2e Kurt Nilsen - She's So High was my favourite. And I liked him in Norwegian Idol and in the World Idol too. I've been listening to The Dodos too. And I like their music a lot. Thanks to hoopla1 for posting the link.
