Yes to all you wrote, MWP, and I especially love this part. I had edited out of my already too-long essay something similar but not as well-articulated. I do think that it is a complete mindfuck to many men that women find Adam sexually attractive. Not only do they not understand, but many seem to find it somehow personally threatening. I really, truly do NOT get it, and would honestly love someone to figure this out. This isn't just about Adam, because the way that straight men feel about gay men explains a lot of things, from why straight PDs have sometimes been reluctant to embrace Adam's music to why hate crimes against gay men happen. I think the answer is rooted in the most basic of human drives/biology. We talk so much about societal attittudes and moving toward acceptance, but I also think something much more basic is involved here. I think the people who are scared of Adam are those that believe being gay is a choice and not the way you are born. Anyone with any common sense knows that it is not a choice. Unfortunately, there are millions of men and women (who indoctrinate their children) that are not smart enough to get the latest facts and findings regarding sexuality. There are religious people who will only believe what they think the Bible and/or their religion tells them. They refuse to accept any scientific truths. Adam appeals to straight men and women who understand that people are born with their sexuality. Who even thinks "gay" anymore about Adam. We are so enamoured with his talent and his charm, that is all we see. My husband loves Adam. I love Adam. Forty-six years of marriage tells me my husband isn't gay so there is no reason for him to fear Adam. I don't know what we are going to do with those people who are so blind. I try to be kind and understanding of them, but it is so hard. What an interesting discussion we have today. I'll throw some things into the table as well. First, Dicklin... His agenda was (and is) to keep his magazine in business, and he'll do whatever it takes. If I remember right, the magazine was not doing great financially; and suddendly Adam (who was selling like hot cakes at the time) was handed to him to salvage the day. He used Adam to get exposure, and it seems to have worked for him... No doubt in my mind he'll do it again, if needed, but the situation has changed. Adam has taken on a more (politically) active role in the media, and not only in GLBT issues, but in general: probably now is the time for Dicklin to "play nice" and show support? We shall see... Moving on... I agree with Murly about the misogyny; any personality trait that is tagged with feminity is perceived "weak" and "not favorable", regardless if you are a woman or a man. Of course anything you do not understand is frightening.... While I usually do not find beautiful men; Tommy, Tom Cruise, etc. sexually appealing to me, I find Adam VERY appealing.... LOL. I can understand this, because I feel I "know" him. Intelligence, charisma, sweetness, articulacy, etc. works for me in Adam's case the same way it would with anybody I meet in RL. The minute I laid eyes on him I was fairly certain he was gay, despite the fact that he did not display any "visible gay mannerisms", on the contrary, he looked very HBIC all the time... And his gayness is often so campy and OTT, it's hilarious. Generally, the same way we are born with our sexuality, we are born with certain personality traits. Say, somewhat effeminate traits in body-movement, gesturing style, and speech (lisp and tone) patterns are perceived as gay. BUT, as we do connect certain traits with "gay" or "lesbian", how much of these stereotypical characters are intrinsic and if some are emphasized by choice? If adopted, maybe to be able to better relate to "gay lifestyle" and to find partners? Again, if adopted, why take on something that can (possibly) raise negative response on others? We had an interesting discussion about this with my DH, who is in the opinion that these are completely adopted, both gay and lesbian who show these stereotypical traits do that on purpose. I tend to think that it's more of who you are and you can not switch it on/off as you please. I mean, I can lower my speaking voice and alter the pace for a while when giving a speech, but I would not speak the same way on a day to day basis. If anybody should find these categorizations offensive I apologize, but please believe me when I say I would like to learn from you who know more.

since things are quiet I thought I'd reminisce a bit. it was one year ago that I "met" Adam after the Hampton Beach concert and he held my hand. *swoons anew* This was my 3rd concert and I had run out of friends to go with. I had gone to Foxwoods with someone who was more interested in seeing the casino, and didn't really like the concert (that's a story for another day >.<). I went to South Shore Music Circus with a friend who loved Adam on Idol but hadn't kept up with him afterward. She thought the concert was great, but wasn't up for another one the very next night! So I went to Hampton Beach by myself and had a great time. Afterward, I was heading for the parking lot when I passed by the barricades and saw people lined up for autographs. Hey, why sit in traffic...I got the very last spot at the end of the line, leaning on Orianthi's bus. It was her last concert and they were having a farewell party on the bus. One by one, the performers came out and headed onto the party bus, which was literally rocking. At one point, Monte came out and said to us, "It's not what it looks like!" :D So, I waited for an hour with some random drunk people who had not attended the concert and had no idea who anyone was, but stood around anyhow. :D I'm not one to go after autographs but I did have my CD liner with me "just in case" and I got the band's signatures while waiting for Adam to show. Finally, a roar went through the crowd. I could see Adam walking quickly past the crowd, heading for the party bus (that I was leaning on) with a big, beautiful smile on his face. But instead of turning to go into the bus, he came right over to me! With a pen in his hand! Ready to start signing! I somehow rose to the occasion and stuck out my CD liner. I guess my hand maybe wasn't the steadiest because he put his hand (soft, warm and glittery) over mine while creating the scribble that I flailed all the way home over. He had changed into a t-shirt and sweats after the concert, and every visible inch of skin and hair was completely covered in colorful glitter. So beautiful up close! And, you know how people are always saying they didn't expect him to be so tall? I was expecting a giant! So he actually seemed slight to me, and young, and "normal" (except for the glitter). Very different from his larger-than-life on-stage persona, but just as charismatic. And he looked genuinely happy to be there. Anyhow, I drove home that night with a huge silly grin on my face...in fact it's there now, just thinking about him walking toward me, like a glittery vision.

Tuned in on VH1 hoping to catch a rerun of BTM or DSA. They are showing Titanic and maybe it is my imagination but Di Caprio sometimes looks like Adam. What a fine looking chap and has grown so much as an actor since Titanic. I specially liked what he said at that dinner with the haves, "Make each day count". LOL - looking at that douchey fiance of Rose. His eyeliner is creepy on him but never on our BB! I hope one day we will see Adam on the big screen. Universe, are you listening? That's so interesting. When Adam was asked who he would like to play him in a movie about his life,he said Leonardo Di Caprio.

The (L)Out Magazine Gate discussion has churned up some recurring, random thoughts I have about AFL; who he is as a person; who he is to me and other fans and who he is to the public. The thoughts truly are random and I don't have time :-/ (damn rl sometimes) to write a beautiful essay (looking at you Q3 and noangel), so I thought I'd just throw them out there in bullet point fashion. So for what it's worth: 8-) - AFL hit me like a meteor. I have NEVER stanned anyone this way before - short of falling in love in rl.
- This infatuation with him is like being newly in love and it feels really good. (want to bring him up in every conversation, think about him all the time, protective of him, makes
me "swoon" etc.) But easier on my homelife than having an affair! - Why did this happen? I never saw it coming - but it sure has made life more interesting.
- I thought the "crush" would dissipate by now. Uh, that's a NO.
- I'm convinced that Adam has "earned" his current level of confidence by staying positive as much as possible even with what must have been an overwhelming amount of disapproval, skepticism and patronizing indulgence throughout his life. (Case in point before Idol: interviewed about his Zodiac Costume - he accepted the edict that he could not have flames and was already formulating his next plan. LOL)
- His confidence and ability to deflect negative reaction help him to be so brave in his choices -
almost to the point of testing his limits - screw the outcome. (Ring of Fire as early as the Top 11 show, FYE for 1st single, Details Magazine, AMA routine, Rock This Town - black lipstick etc., Fantasy Springs - 1st solo concert he decides to dress very feminine and ethereal or you might say as a weird, fucking, fag!)
- I think the fact that he could do the glitter and glam to his heart's content without losing (actually gaining) fans has freed him to actually not have to "test" the fan base but truly be as out there or conservative as he wants to be. It won't matter. That must feel wonderful to him. I hope it feels that way.
- I think it's ironic that people are snide about Adam and his female fans when gay guys are falling all over straight women pop stars. The publications that are cool to Adam, rave
about GaGa, Kathy Griffin etc. That's okay, but don't they see the irony?
- If Adam has truly agreed to be in Out Magazine, Hicklin will NOT allow an overly positive commentary. At best it will be neutral and more likely it will be snarky (sorry Neil, it seems to be a word now) and brief. Not enough to cause an uproar, but not too much like eating crow either. Hope I'm wrong but it seems to be the way After Elton is treating most things Adam, from what I can see.
- I am really enjoying the idea of Out having to be nice and coax Adam back. ;D
- Gotta go so I won't go on and on about how he's ruined all other singers for me, broke
Idol, has the best boyfriend I ever could have imagined for him, how accomplished and smart his fans are, etc., etc., etc.
I know none of this is new or profound. I think the one point I make that I haven't seen discussed before it that I really do think he is so immune to disapproval and so used to it, that he really did TEST us up until now (maybe not consciously but nevertheless). I don't mean he wasn't being true to himself. No, he was being true to his most freaky self, not willing to compromise anything for acceptance. Why can't the gay community (whatever that is) applaud that? And, while they're at it, why don't they applaud the fans for accepting it all? Okay, stepping off now. makemineamojito.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/soapbox2.gif[/Yes! Yes! Yes! I love this post. Great discussion today. I love this place, and all of you who make it the intelligent, thought provoking, sometimes deep, sometimes shallow visually perfect place it is! Adam deserves fans like us, LOL. ;D

I am so enjoying the BFTP postings. I have watched more videos of past performances in the last couple of days than I have in several months. Ahhhhhh, he is so much fun to watch and listen to...I always find myself smiling. I want new materials, pictures and video, but I don't mind looking back too.
Hicklin better not do anything stupid. That is all.
