Queen and Adam Lambert
Spark Arena, Auckland
The irony was not lost on me that on the same night as the annual Pride Parade was taking place I was sent to review Queen, a band whose late lead singer gleefully subverted the rock world with his openly camp persona and less than heterosexual after hours activities. The fact that his replacement - an unabashedly gay pop star – won over a very middle New Zealand audience was a joy to behold, and the show an absolute delight.
Queen guitarist Brian May clearly seems to be living his best life on stage. ...................................................................................................................................
When I told a friend in passing that I was off to see Queen with Adam Lambert at Spark Arena on Saturday night, her eyes lit up and the superlatives spilled forth. After seeing them the last time they toured New Zealand – around two years ago – she had fallen under the spell of the old band with a brand new vocalist, and had even gone as far as grabbing tickets for the Saturday AND Sunday show this time around.
When I walked into Spark Arena for the Saturday show it was apparent that she wasn't alone in her fervour for the newly rejuvenated Queen, with excitement peaking long before the band hit the stage and a love for Lambert clear in every punter.

Part of Queen's charm for me was always the element of panto that lurked beneath their cracking rock anthems, their unique subversion – thanks to late frontman Mercury – of a traditionally macho-heavy genre. Lambert seems to understand this key element, and as the incumbent in the role of Queen frontman has definitely made himself at home.
