What absolutely wonderful posts here, starting with the incredible one from midwifespal. And this:
ITA. Adam has said time & time again that his sexuality is only part of who he is. It doesn't define him. Non fans often connect his theatricality on stage to his "gayness" but I think that comes from a different place altogether. Many gay men are staid, ordinary-looking guys with nothing at all theatrical in their persona. In fact there has been much criticism on gay sites of his flamboyance (their word), costumes and makeup. So no, eyeliner is definitely NOT an identifier for gay.
His use of preference and lifestyle have confused me too. I'm glad to see some well-thought-out explanations here. I can refer to my "preferences" in men (no beefy muscular types please) but that may be something that was in my genetic structure from the beginning. I know that I could never make a choice to love big, beefy, muscular men. So me liking a certain type of male and a gay man liking another male (also of a certain type - PAE) - is that so different? Is one a choice but not the other?
And the "born that way" explanation could be almost an apology. As in "Not my fault. I can't help it. I was born this way." And maybe Adam uses preference because he wants to own who he is and not attribute it to just an accident of birth.
Whew. We I need new pics!!

I don't understand your way of life but I support your right to embrace it. And right now, I am embracing a cranberry walnut oatmeal cookie from Jason's Deli and it is y.u.m.m.y! I'm not a chocolate lover either. Oatmeal and walnut/peanut cookies, perfect! Love chocolate, but not in a cookie... wonder why... :

I love this story. Just about says it all. I love it too. I'm holding out hope that the next generation gets it right. No pressure though, kids. I think there are some people who have been oppressed in a group, because of their religion, color or sexual orientation, who cling to victimhood as part of their identity . when someone like Adam, who doesn't feel like a victim and is young ,out and proud comes along ,he threatens that very identity &they become hostile and angry. The answer usually is we paved the way for you,you have no idea what we have been through. While this may be true,Adam has come along at a different time,a time of change .I see this happening even with young women who don't understand what women have gone through to achieve their rights. I must say I've been guilty of thinking that some younger females just don't appreciate what came before.Maybe I share some of that victimhood mentality as part of my being & identity.Maybe it's generational.I think Adam brought the lifestyle remark into the conversation ,because how he lives, in his gay being, is just part of his lifestyle.Just how he lives his life,no hidden meaning intended, just what is is and total acceptance. Sorry to go on....

I'm doing a brief scan of the thread and am back on page 8- midwifespal, aspen, murly, and mys*&@^#r, I like your discussion of the words Adam uses (chooses to use?). I've always thought that sometimes he may be simply falling back on common, though now out-of-favor, phrases without thinking about it, but that most often he is indicating: orientation = gay preference, or "who I choose to sleep with" = he chooses boys, of course, because his orientation is gay lifestyle = the choice to be out and proud, also the choice to be open about all the various areas of his life Got to run to an appointment now- peace&love Exactly !!!!!! I like the definitions. Been gone for what seems an eternity, and I come back to a discussion of chocolate, oatmeal and peanut butter cookies. Actually all 3 combined make a fabulous cookie. I have this secret recipe that is to die for. I know a little late, but those pics in Bora Bora, Adam is such a stud. I don't think he retired those turquoise shorts, I think they are in bathing suit rotation. However, there is also the posssibility, since he really checks out twitter - since the turquoise trunks were in Mexico, Bali, Hawaii and Florida - he needed to provide us with a new discussion point. He might also be thinking, just in case paps do take pics, he wanted to show that he does have mutiple trunks and that we would be totally thrilled to see new trunks, that were more appealing. Of course we are thrilled to death. Those are amazing trunks and filled out quite nicely. Did I say he looked rather studly.Yes, you did but it bears repeating and we never get tired it! BTW--welcome back! You were missed! How's your mom doing? ( If you want to share that yummy recipe, I check my PM's often! )

That's what I've always thought, too, cookie. I know Adam doesn't always mean it this way, but when I think of his "lifestyle" it makes me think of his clothes, his make-up, his hair, his rock n roll style. I never think of any of it as gay. I still wonder why people like Jake Shears are so well loved (as opposed to Adam,) in the gay community, and he is, IMO, way more flamboyant than Adam. And why is it OK for Billie of Green Day to wear heavy black eye liner, with no criticism? Why doesn't anyone call Matt Bellamy, of Muse, "too flamboyant" for wearing an entire suit that is sliver and sparkly?? Oh, and why does the gay community actually believe that Gaga is Bi? : "Things that make me go Hmmm?"

I love this story. Just about says it all. I love it too. I'm holding out hope that the next generation gets it right. No pressure though, kids. How adorable..loved it too.. Today I was trying to get a few (tax related boring as shit) things done and had LOGO channel on for noise.. LOL anyways a show "Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon" was on.. never saw it..What an INTERESTING Program (maybe some of you have) very very interesting. Jack Wrangler one of the more famous Adult film industry actors. Did straight and gay porn. Made the crossover from Porn to Leading Man even though he was gay. so anyways One of the observations I made during this program was that it sounded as if.. gay/straight were trying to live together after all the free love of the 60's & 70's and wasn't as segregated before the Aids scare. Once Aids became an "epidemic" anyone gay was shuffled off and the key thrown away. We have been trying to come back together ever since. YMMV

I wonder if the difference between Adam and Jake Shears is that The Scissor Sister's music is considered alternative rather than mainstream/pop and it gets him another kind of cred.
