Thanks for the vid with Bebe in it. She's ok. Very average voice. I often wonder how some singers get kind of popular when they don't sing all that well. But then, as Adam said, "It's not about the voice." She's pretty underwhelming, but apparently lots of people like her. Good for them and for her. Nick makes sense because he's promoting a new song. It's certainly an odd mix of finale performers. Bebe's big hit came with the collaboration of Florida Georgia Line. Both of those guys are over 30 but they are one of the biggest acts in country music with crossover appeal because of earlier collaborations with rap artists. They play arenas. I doubt that country/pop song would have blown up for Bebe on top 40 and country without them. But it probably sets her up to do well on her own. FGL have won a lot of awards. They were honored that same night on CMT when Adam and Leona sang Girl Crush for Little Big Town. She actually started off writing for other artists before breaking out as a recording artist herself. One song she wrote won a Grammy in 2015. “The Monster” by Eminem and Rihanna.

But I think the success of this FGL collaboration will serve her well with future recordings. But this is such a hit or miss industry I could be wrong, lol.

3ku1 with lack of artistry, do you mean top40? Yes, a strong-catchy hook seems to be THE thing atm. What criteria do you use for artistry? I'm genuinely interested. When do you think there was more artistry in music, what songs, which artists.

Current US top 10 on Top 40. Pretty diverse. I see lots of artistry here. Interestingly, the Top 10 on iTunes has only one of these songs. 1 1 CAMILA CABELLO Never Be The Same 2 2 ZEDD/MAREN MORRIS/GREY The Middle 3 3 THE WEEKND & KENDRICK LAMAR Pray For Me 4 4 DRAKE God's Plan 6 5 IMAGINE DRAGONS Whatever It Takes 7 6 MAROON 5 Wait 8 7 BAZZI Mine 5 8 BEBE REXHA Meant To Be f/F.G.L. 9 9 MARSHMELLO & ANNE-MARIE Friends 12 10 Post Malone PSYCHO

If you team up with someone and put out a song, you have doubled your chances for fan attention. Hope Adam can do this. Didn't he just hint that his new album has a collab on it? Or maybe I just mis-heard him. Anyway, it is a pretty interesting that the iTunes top ten and Billboard top ten do not really match up.

Adams built his career on that voice. It has made him rich LOL. But its uncommon really. I Do notice a lack of artistry in music atm. But the industry is a young persons game. OF course their are a ton of older artists ova 30 on the radio. SO I think it really comes down to the music. Love your line, "Adam built his career on that voice....But it's uncommon really." Adam is one of a rare breed where the voice quality actually matters. Many, probably most, successful singers don't have that level of voice quality. Success in music is so many other things, not the least of which is a song that has a hook that sticks in people's heads, even it's not that great of a song. It's all a magic potion of elements that lead to success. In Adam's singing realm, voice DOES matter. In other singing realms, it doesn't. But there is success in both, and I like singers in both realms.

But there is success in both, and I like singers in both realms. On US radio, the main magic potion to become a hit is if they spin it non-stop. It is pretty automatic for some artists no matter what they release. It can be a great or not so great song. It can be well written or not. It can be a collaboration or not. It can even be an emotional ballad when released by artists who get everything they put out played. You can be under or over 30. Good singer or not. The same corporations own the majority of the US radio stations. If they say it is a go, it is. Long gone are the days where individual stations or DJ's had a say in what they thought their audience wanted to hear so the quality is not always the only driver. Good streaming is great but radio is still the hit maker for the most part in the US. ETA: Adam has had collaborations that did not get played or were not released in the US. Trove Lo, Avicii, Steve etc.

Just to be clear, that is the Radio Top 10 above. Not Billboard.
The Aoki collab did get play as did the Tritonal collab. Just not enough. Without being on a major label, it is close to impossible!
