Queen and Adam Lambert are crowned in Barcelona - Review (Translated)There was a defining moment on Sunday night at the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona. After the first six songs of the concert, Adam Lambert was at the front of the catwalk that went into the public area of the concert.
He had just played a superb "Killer Queen", one of those songs so typically Queen, with harmonies so typically Queen and with a so typical Mercury left that it does not fit in the head to think that another person can even try to sing it. Lambert addresses the audience and says "I know what you are thinking." "Oh, it's not Freddie Mercury," he says in a mocking tone, verbalizing what a broad section of the public is surely thinking in those moments. "Do not fuck!" He emphasizes, before saying "that's impossible, because Freddie Mercury there was only one!". The public erupts, predictably. From that moment the concert stopped being that of a tribute band with the remains of Queen and a skillful vocalist to be a festive and emotional celebration of Queen's legacy before nine thousand sickly followers. A small show of respect for Freddie, a comment to tell the audience not to be wrong, that being on that stage he does not think it's Freddie. With that, the good Adam Lambert turned the night and got the most doubtful sector of the public came up. It was sad to see the Palau with a half entrance, where the front steps were blocked and the track was not completely full. After all, the binomial Queen + Adam Lambert had passed through the same venue almost exactly two years ago and despite the renewed setlist, the curiosity of a large segment of the public had already been satiated. There is another issue, as a fellow journalist pointed out: musical entertainment is so saturated with tributes to Queen, Queen musicals, thematic nights of Queen and Queen, Queen, Queen that perhaps the legacy of the group is being overexploited. Not counting the impending film that will arrive on October 31 and whose trailer already has all the fans on edge. Queen for the Instagram generation The show, which lasted two hours and twenty minutes, began somewhat later than expected. The election of several participants of "Operación Triunfo" as opening act was not very successful and very criticized in the networks, but the world of the promotion of concerts is what it has ( Live Nation , promoter of the concert of Queen in Barcelona, is responsible for the tour of the television program throughout Spain, that is the reason). A few minutes after ten o'clock at night the band came on stage with a renewed and spectacular stage and a contagious energy. With the shape of a guitar whose mast was the central catwalk and with many mobile elements such as semicircular screens and hydraulic platforms, the stage had everything that Queen did not need at the peak of fame - there is the simple stage of Wembley concerts as example. However Brian May, the historic guitarist and helmsman of the band since the death of Freddie, knows well that the public needs something to look at and something to marvel at. In the absence of Mercury, with something you have to fill the stage.Setlist and scenario renewedWith some new features on the setlist, the concert was varied enough with respect to the occasion of two years ago so that whoever repeated it did not feel cheated, although the news was more numerous in the visual than in the musical. Things as they are. The beginning with "Tear it Up" in hard rock key was a blast, followed by the old "Seven Seas of Rhye" and a rod "Tie Your Mother Down". There was a lack of electricity among the public, usually generated by the approaches of Adam and Brian May to the central catwalk. Everything changed with the aforementioned Lambert's dissertation on his own role in the band, which came after "Play The Game", "Fat Bottommed Girls" and the eternal "Killer Queen". From there, the party arrived with "Do not Stop Me Now",The scenic elements such as the "Bicycle Race" pink bicycle on which Lambert strolls on stage have such a determinedly gay touch that one wonders if Queen is not exceeding Lambert's sexuality to entertain the audience and generate Some connection with a Freddie that was much more measured in that aspect. Not because Adam should be, but because he may be forcing a character unnecessarily. Lambert, on the other hand, walks around the stage as if he were his, wiggles, dances and makes the songs his own with self-confidence and mastery. I can think of few current voices and interpreters better than Lambert to give people something close to the Queen experience. Although two years ago Lambert was still contaminated by the vocal excess syndrome promoted by certain television programs like the one that gave him popularity, which squeaked a lot, on this occasion he has been much more faithful to the vocal lines and the original spirit of the same, but without losing their own identity as a vocalist. A central part balanced between hits and personal brilliance
In the central part of the concert there were moments of personal brilliance with major hits and minor themes of the band's repertoire. There was room for Roger Taylor to have his moment of glory singing "I'm In Love With My Car" and perform a battery battle with Tyler Warren that surprised by the abilities that still holds the diminutive drummer at 68 years of age. There was room for Adam Lambert to sing his solo song "Lucy", which originally collaborated with Brian May - a very AOR eighties theme, by the way. And there was room for Brian May to go to the end of the catwalk to make his walk through the "Concierto de Aranjuez" and an emotional "Love of My Life" that filled many eyes of tears when Freddie Mercury appeared on the screen to sing the last part of the song. A final for the memory
Although every Queen concert is an avalanche of popular hits, the final part is always especially dense. "I Want to Break Free", with a giant mirror ball on stage, was epic. "Who Wants To Live Forever" made our skin crawl, and even Brian May's solo with "Last Horizon" and much of "Brighton Rock" was welcome. The final trio, with "The Show Must go On", performed in an impeccable manner by Lambert, the inevitable "Radio Ga Ga" with a sea of hands making the classic rhythm of the chorus, and the eternal "Bohemian Rhapsody" served to close the main section of the show. www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ9rUzIMcZQAfter a break of five minutes, Freddie appeared on the video screen to play with the audience with the classical vocal performance of the Wembley concert. Again, the tears and the people leaving the voice were mixed in equal parts. The final ending, with "We Will Rock You" and "We Are The Champions", with a crowned Lambert strolling his glamor on the boards, was a trip to a not too distant past which nobody can emulate better than those who were there originally. . The final greetings, with the support band led by Spike Edney in the first place, Lambert by his side in second place and finally May and Taylor with the biggest applause were the culmination of a great Sunday night. Not the Stones, not U2. Only Queen has a repertoire of hits so indelibly fixed in the collective imagination as this one. It's more, Even if you have consciously tried not to follow the band's career, you will end up singing half of what it sounds like in this show. It is impossible not to do it. This long review was very thorough and thoughtful. The write clearly sees Adam's talents and the success of the whole QAL thing. And he loves and respects. Brian and Roger. Interesting that he sees a kind of "Queen saturation" going on right now. All the tours, as well as the new film coming out, etc. He made it sound like the venue wasn't nearly full because QAL had been there not that long ago. I don't know how full it was, but those who were there seemed to be enjoying themselves.
I thought there was one pretty funny translation "mis-use." He wrote that "Who Wants To Live Forever made our skin crawl." I don't think he meant that as a negative. I think he meant "make our skin tingle" or something that translates more like excitement and thrills. He obviously admired Adam's performance of the song. This review ended on a really positive note, though,
